Democratic Congressman Brad Ellsworth told 14 News Friday morning that he has decided he wants to take Evan Bayh's place in the U.S. Senate.
Ellsworth is in his second term from southwestern Indiana's 8th district and has been mentioned as a possible choice for Democrats since Bayh's unexpected announcement Monday that he wouldn't seek a third Senate term.
The 51-year-old Ellsworth has won by big margins in both his congressional campaigns.
He was a career police officer and was twice elected as sheriff in Vanderburgh County sheriff.
Others have expressed interest in being the Democratic nominee like Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.
On Thursday, the representatives with the Democratic party said they had spoke with State Representative Trent VanHaaften about running for Ellsworth's congressional seat if he decides to run for Senate.

No surprise, but it’s official now.
I was afraid Ellsworth would get in the race. He’ll be a tough opponent.
Very true, perhaps the strongest candidate the ‘Rats could find. By contrast, the GOP field is comprised of a carpetbagger and some little-known candidates.
FOX news had video of him telling off town hall meeting attendees. Its HIS townhall meeting and HE’LL decide how its run and who films what. I believe he’s also an SEIU nipple dangler.
THere will be big support from the region and Indy....Get the anti-fraud system in place.
this opens up his seat right? Two for one Opportunity I think, knocking off Bayh and another IN seat.
You might be thinking of baron Hill (D-IN).
Yeah I was looking at his photo and the guy from the video looks older.
Just imagine if he looses.....
I was pretty excited about Coats, but he’s like a Romney.
I mean, the guy is on video in North Carolina talking about how great it is and where he’ll make his home. Not to mention his anti-2nd Amendment record and lobbying for Hugo Chavez. I’m liking Stutzman more and more.
I’m sure Ellsworth is of the same ilk and cut from the same cloth.
Ping
“Im liking Stutzman more and more.”
I’ll support either Stutzman or John Hostettler.
The Dems would have been better off picking a ‘little-known’ candidate of their own.
I wouldn’t want to be a sitting Dem congressman running for a higher office in this environment. And in a red leaning state, no less. He may look good in the polls now, but once he’s got the Obama agenda hung around his neck, he’ll go down in flames.
I Have a competing article started, 10 minutes after you. Did not mean to do that.
Somebody filed signatures for Ellsworth’s House seat. So, naturally, this whole scramble was scripted.
She didn’t have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Very true. This race will be interesting and unpredictable.
“What happened to that restaurant, feminist chick?”
She couldn’t collect enough signatures to get on the ballot.
