In slip, Scott Brown calls Romney 'Republican light' By Alexander Bolton - 02/18/10 04:55 PM ET
Scott Brown on Thursday called Mitt Romney Republican-light before immediately correcting himself at the CPAC conference in Washington.
The cringe-worthy moment came in the midst of Sen. Brown (R-Mass.) otherwise very warm introduction for the former Massachusetts governor.
It is my truly, truly my unique pleasure to introduce to you one of the Republican light one of Republican Partys bright lights and a man I once called my governor and now Im even more proud to call my very, very dear friend, Brown said.
A Freudian slip? Romney often parried charges in the 2008 Republican presidential primary that he was not a true conservative because of his past support for abortion rights and gun control.
Few conservatives in the packed conference hall appeared to notice the slip and gave Romney a rousing round of applause when he took the stage.
Brown has credited Romney for being one of the earliest supporters of his campaign to replace the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.).
But there might be some tension between Romney and Brown if Brown harbors any ambition to run for president in 2012.
Romney is expected to run for the White House in 2012 and would not be happy about competing with his political protégé.
A GOP strategist who advised Romneys 08 campaign predicted that Browns political aides will steer him away from a 2012 run because they are still loyal to the former governor.
The team around him will uniformly recommend that running for president is the dumbest thing because theyre dead loyal to Mitt Romney, said the strategist.
After his speech, Brown declined to comment on Romneys White House ambitions.
Im not sure what his plans are, said Brown. Im here actually just to support him. Ive known him for many, many years and I have great respect for him and his family.
I am not quite seeing their point. Wasn’t he correct?
That’s not a slip, it’s and astute observation...
That’s not a slip......
Can those same aides steer Romney away from running again too please?
hehe He was, but some things are better said in private. Then again, we are getting more than an idea what’s really going on in Scott Brown’s head.
Sounds like Mitt has his mitts on the staff of a lot of power players. Maybe that is how he seems to have that much control over everything.
What petty minutia the Dims will latch onto these days ...
Pathetic.
Speaking truth to power — even if he didn’t mean to do it at that time :-)
If it was a Freudian slip--or perhaps even deliberate--he certainly did it very cleverly, with full deniability.
Fruedian slip maybe?
Gimme a break. This looks like a perfectly reasonable slip of the tongue. It is obvious that he meant “one of the lights of the Republican Party”. And it’s obvious that the audience took it that way. Who are these maroons at The Hill who want to twist every word out of a politician’s mouth to make it seem that the pol has some ulterior motive?
“One of the Republican lights.” That would be kind of ambiguous eh?

Romney and Clone
Thread solved, no further discussion required.
The headline is misleading. Brown initially called Romney a “Republican light.” Now that conjures up images of low tar and nicotine cigarettes as well as of lampposts.
Yes Brown was correct, as Romeny IS Republican light and I will up the ante and call him an out an out phoney bologna RINO of the worst kind. Odd there are still FReepers that would vote for Romeny once again. Rinos need to go and those that vote for RINOs should learn their lesson from 2008.
Romney care is not light.
If they are cloning RINOs now, then we are all doomed.
Scott Brown is a moderate.
Its pretty bad to be called Republican-light by a moderate from Mass.
