We carefully studied the law (with the help of some of the “best”, high-paid, experienced tax lawyers in the business), and then began to do exactly what the “big boys” were doing (except that we weren’t steeling from our congregation or lying to the government about our massive profits in the name of God). We took a great deal of care to make it all visible, following all of the rules, exactly the way the law said it was to be done.

What?

He started his own church?

Like most manifestos, it's very light on the details of exactly what he did. Most of the time, it's just those details which are needed to get the whole picture.

I bet that’s the case, TChris — that was one of the ideas suggested in the mid-eighties and circulating in the tech community: start your own Church, and all your household becomes the tax exempt vicarage. You donate from your earned wages to your own church, of which you are the minister.

He started his own church?

Apparently. I heard of it, and saw a website explaining how it is to be done, about 10 years ago. There is, or was at the time, a piece of tax code that did not require any actual church-like activity to be done. One could, according to that Internet advice, file the right papers under the right paragraph of the law and bingo, become a pastor of the church of one. Then any income was supposed to be laundered through that church.
