San Francisco is facing an epic financial crisis and a potential tide-turning election. Mayor Gavin Newsom is responding with two words.
See ya.
Newsom swears he hasn't decided whether to leave the mayor's office and run for lieutenant governor, but that's how it looks.
He's assembled a campaign team and Wednesday he just met the deadline to file a ballot statement to appear in the November voter guide.
As a cold political calculation it makes sense. If he wins - and he's a big favorite - he jumps from a job that ends in 2011 to one that runs to 2014. He will be in Sacramento, burnishing his statewide reputation. He'll be a political player, have an entourage, and will be able to jet around and pontificate to his heart's content.
But he also will be quitting on San Francisco.

That’ll be a switch. Newsom is usually causing the runs to those around him!
Sorry, just getting over the flu!!
He quit the governor’s race because he was polling poorly against Brown. I don’t know who is GOP opponent will be (and PLEASE don’t let it be Maldonado), but I’d get those arrogant gay marriage “whether you like it or not” sound bites ready. Too bad they can’t show footage of what a sewer San Francisco has become (people crapping on cars, etc.).
Newsome hasn’t quite come to terms with the fact that outside of San Francisco, he’s considered a jerk.
Too bad they cant show footage of what a sewer San Francisco has become (people crapping on cars, etc.).
YooToob. So what if "they" can't.
