Bushes in Naples: George W. and Jeb show personal side in appearance

NAPLES — The Bush brothers packed the house at the Naples Grande Beach Resort.

Former President George W. Bush and his brother Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, spoke Tuesday night as part of the Naples Town Hall Distinguished Speakers Series. They talked issues _ everything from health care and the Iraq war to budget deficits and Social Security reform.

George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. president, has stayed out of the spotlight, limiting his face-time in public since leaving the White House about a year ago.

He and his brother – the state’s 43rd governor – addressed a crowd of more than 1,000 who purchased tickets to see them. Tickets to hear the duo speak started at $200.

The brothers had the crowd laughing, clapping and sighing with heart-felt emotions as they showed their more personal side. A few times, George W. Bush fought tears as he talked about the support of his wife in the Oval Office and how his decisions to send more troops to Iraq hurt families in the U.S. who lost their sons, daughters, husbands and wives to the war.

“That’s nice, but I don’t trust Bushes.”

Indeed. Any man who view Bill Clinton as a “another brother” is not to be trusted.

Oh shut up! I don’t “hate” the Bushes...I just hate people like you who gloss over their inconspicuous, soddy, uninspiring records of incompetency and try to make the two New England yankee carpetbaggers (who now claim to be Texans) named George into George Washington. Next you’ll be trying to tell me that Woody Hayes was a model of sportsmanship and Jim Tressel is a great football coach!

I corrected the error about the Navy and ANG. According to the pilot, President Bush took the controls and flew the jet.

Big deal! If you were to be taken up as a "back seater" with the Navy Blue Angels or the Air Force Thunderbirds (they usually let media or local community officials ride with them before an air show); you'd be given a few minutes with the controls too. Naturally, the pilot would take over if you made some sort of miscue. Bush flew a plane in straight and level flight after the "real" pilot trimmed it out...believe me, it's not that hard to do!

The fact is, GWB correctly judged that seeing the Commander-in-Chief get out of a Navy jet on board the Lincoln, even IF he was only in the co-pilot’s seat, would be a tremendous boost to morale not only to the crew of the Lincoln, but to our armed forces world-wide. I think it was well thought out, well executed, and I think it was a good decision.

I have no problem with any CIC visiting troops as being good for morale. But Google images of "Lincoln with the troops," "Wilson with the troops," "FDR with the troops," "Truman with the troops," "JFK with the troops," "LBJ with the troops," "Nixon with the troops," "Reagan with the troops" in fact any president with the troops and you're going to find that all of them are in a busines suit or non-descript civilian attire EXCEPT "Duhpeeyew" who shows up in a flight suit as if he were in combat. Bush could have easily taken his Sea Stallion to the deck of the Lincoln and been just as welcomed...but, instead, he opted for a political stunt. And that is all it was: A stunt!

(snip)

...know-nothings and smart-mouthed adolescents who just make up horrific things out of whole cloth (as two have done on this thread)

(snip)

...especially since a couple of the worst offenders here are practically still adolescents.

(snip)

I am convinced that there are least some of these people who hate him because of his character, and not in spite of it.

(snip)

And these people are drenched in hatred, fuming, steaming, vomiting hatred.

(snip)

The demons were out in force on that thread

(snip)

Several things here:

One, I have not found anyone here on FR attacking Bush due to his character, ohioWfan. I have, however, found many people attacking Bush because of his actions: the push for amnesty, the bailouts, signing McCain-Feingold, NCLB, the Medicare expansion, etc. And there is nothing wrong with attacking him over those items.

Two, breaking out the ad hominems, i.e., "demons" and "adolescents," etc., as you are fond of doing, generally tends to indicate that you don't have an argument, something I wouldn't expect from someone who in the past has claimed to be a professor.

Three, and finally, breaking out the word "hate" is something I usually only hear from left-wingers and -bots (e.g., Romneybots, Bushbots, McCainiacs, Obamabots, Sarahbots, etc.). Nobody here hates Bush, except in your mind.

You haven't been on FR long enough to understand the degree to which OhioWFan is speaking. Both she and I have been here since the start of the Bush Admin in 2001. We have seen, read and responded to things to which you have no clue. We have seen civil discourse and disagreement. But we've also seen all the nastiness that FR has to offer when it comes to Bush.

OWF is right.

So before you go off half-cocked, educate yourself.

And you, of all people, should know the degree to which this has been done simply by looking at how some freepers (yourself included at times) attack Sarah Palin.

That's because she's supporting McCain.

Duh.

Or are you going to give her a free pass just cause she's Sarah?

I have far too much gray in my beard to be an “adolescent”. I’m knocking on 40’s door. ;)

That said, age does not beget wisdom. It just means you’re old.

The fact that she views all those who oppose LBJ II *because of his politics* as “demons” with whom she is engaged in some sort of mythic spiritual battle.... is truly bizarre.

We also apparently don’t believe in God because we don’t believe in George.

Dear God you really have no memory, do you? See, this gets back to the point OWF made:

You can disagree with what a political candidate says/does, but still support them.

Why is that so damn hard for you to understand?

99.9% of Sarah supporters here on FR don't like her supporting McCain- and have said so. But unlike the .1% who abandoned alleged support for her, we get it. Even Rush Limbaugh gets it.

Too bad you don't.

Need I remind you: You said you were not 'guilty by association' for supporting a candidate but not a particular position. Why are you such a hypocrite when it comes to Sarah supporters?

Would you like me to go find your EXACT WORDS for all to see?

I don’t “hate” the Bushes...I just hate people like you

Thank you for admitting the latter, which is only true because of the former (both of which are obvious). Calling President Bush "bad," "ugly" and a "village idiot" do not exactly exude respect......at least to normal people. And he did fly the jet for awhile, and he was a jet pilot in the ANG. He would be the first to admit that he didn't couldn't fly the jet on his own. And it's just silly to say anyone implied anything else. But he did take the controls, and he did fly jets.

Oh shut up!

OK.

Not too many people continue to engage in any kind of conversation with another who freely admits that they hate you. I'm a fighter, but not a masochist. And there's no telling how far you will go with that hatred, and I'm not interested in finding out where your edge is.

But I'm glad you admitted that you hate me, meandog. It's very instructive.

Every point you made deserves to be repeated, rintense.

These guys don't really don't it.

(Actually, I haven't read everything, but I haven't even seen the .1% who fully approved of Sarah's endorsement of McCain).

But to say it means she lacks "integrity" as he has done?

Unbelievable.

There is a valid reason of loyalty for Sarah to support McCain. You might not approve of such, but that makes it no less legitimate for many here on FR. And considering you are a third-party adherent yourself, your own motives for attacking Sarah over this are suspect as well.

“There is a valid reason of loyalty for Sarah to support McCain.”

Loyalty to country and supporters or loyalty to a traitor?

Easy choice for most. I hope she reconsiders.

Get over yourself. McCain is a RINO but he ain’t a traitor. And Palin’s national prominence is due almost entirely to McCain picking her for veep.

One, I have not found anyone here on FR attacking Bush due to his character, ohioWfan

But leveling all manner of personal attacks at those who defend his character, including filthy comments such as yours.

(Did you learn that tactic at Liberty Post, rabs?)

And you are still practically an adolescent - you're not old enough to know a lot about life, just like everyone else your age. Which makes your harrassment of people who support President Bush even more offensive.

And for your information, there were demons out in force on the Pray for President Bush thread. Do you believe in spiritual warfare, rabs? Are you a Christian? Did you see the kinds of evil comments that were deleted by the Mods on that thread? I do and I am, and I did. And I could ping a few of the people who authored and who prayed regularly on that thread to back up my comment about demons. Spiritual warfare, rabs. It exists.

Now, as rintense has said, you don't know what you're talking about. You're too young. You're too inexperienced, and you're too new around here to know what's gone on over the years.

btw, I feel the need once more to say, I stated that I was an adjuct professor on my homepage in 2001, and haven't talked about it since. It is you who are obsessed with bringing it up. It's just what I do, and I said it.....NINE YEARS AGO.

It's a bizarre obsession. Get over it.

“McCain is a RINO but he ain’t a traitor.”

He gave aid and comfort to our enemies (Vietnam, Kosovo, et al) and has stated he agrees with the views of Juan Hernandez.

That makes him a traitor.

“And Palin’s national prominence is due almost entirely to McCain picking her for veep.”

McCain wanted Lieberman and after he lost, attempted to blame his loss on Palin and stab her in the back. He USED Palin to prop up his Dole-ish campaign-to-elect-Obama. You don’t owe anything to someone who USED YOU.
