WASHINGTON (AP) - Determined to have a deficit commission with or without Congress' backing, President Barack Obama plans to announce on Thursday that he is establishing a panel similar to—although weaker than_ the one lawmakers rejected.
Former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former Republican Senate Whip Alan Simpson would lead the panel, a senior administration official said Tuesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president's executive order creating the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform had not been announced.

Forget a panel. How about just stop spending money that the country doesn't have? But he needs a panel to figure this out??? Heaven help us.
The thing is this commission has no power. It will not report before the election. Nobody outside the Beltway remembers these guys. Well, almost no one. Wyomingites have warm feelings for Simpson, but if he recommends raising taxes they won't follow him on that. This group will have even less influence than the 9-11 Commission did.
Fact is, the next Congress will shape fiscal policy, not this bunch.
