They freepmail or ping each other to attack when they find a protected "territory" threatened.

You’re right. Up until recently, in the religion section, I would debate back and forth with members of what I consider cults. As soon as I would begin to get the upper hand, the loser would run to the moderator. The moderator would then put down their magazine and coffee and then promptly warn me or delete my reply. Yet I’ve received countless insults and the moderator has never stepped in. I have never contacted a moderator but then again, once I engage I seldom lose so I feel quite secure and nothing anyone says bothers me. The impulse to go running to Mom left me decades ago. Apparently that’s not the case with a large percentage of our fellow Freepers. It’s because of these petty little character flaws that seem to amount to nothing on an individual level but are incredibly destrucive when done in mass that America, like Free Republic, is going to hell in a handbasket...IMHO
