RELATED STORY: Critics see writing on the hand for Palin RELATED STORY: Palin tells Obama to 'play the war card' Sarah Palin, the former US vice-presidential candidate, is used to finding herself the brunt of jokes but her humour snapped when animated TV show Family Guy appeared to mock her son who has Down syndrome.
The Palin family have called the creators of the show "heartless jerks" after an episode in which a female character with Down syndrome said she was the daughter of an accountant and "my mum's the former governor of Alaska". Ms Palin resigned as Republican governor of Alaska last year.
Ms Palin, who was recently hired by Fox News as a commentator, wrote in a posting on Facebook that the show, also aired on News Corp's Fox network, was a disappointment and "another kick in the gut".
Her post has received thousands of supportive messages.
Instead of elaborating on her views of the show that appeared to mock her 22-month-old son Trig, Ms Palin asked the oldest of her five children, daughter Bristol, to comment, as her reply would be "more restrained and gracious".
Bristol, 19, wrote she had to develop a thick skin as the child of a public figure but insults at her youngest brother hurt too much to remain silent.
"People with special needs face challenges that many of us will never confront and yet they are some of the kindest and most loving people you'll ever meet," Bristol wrote in a statement on her mother's Facebook page.
"Why could anyone want to make their lives more difficult by mocking them? ... If the writers of a particularly pathetic cartoon show thought they were being clever in mocking my brother and my family yesterday, they failed."
However, not everyone has been sympathetic towards the Palins.
Some Family Guy fans say the show is all about mocking people.
"It's their job to make fun of everyone. Get over it," said Tweeter @Little_Siren.
No-one could be immediately reached at Fox to comment.
They are such vile people claiming to be so much for bettering the world.
This sort of thing just makes the left look like what they are ...neurotic hypocrites.
I saw it on Bill O’Reilly; I was livid.
Do you think stuff like this helps Sarah with the general public?
and it puts fellow progressives on the defensive trying to explain it away
This is all out war declared on a private citizen and it comes directly from the White House.
Brother POTUS will come out now and take the high road of course and Katie will put her knee pads back on as Michelle looks on approvingly as they call this attack on Palin uncalled for
but the other attacks are otay!
Only really small minded, hateful people would stoop to sneering at disabled children. I’m talking about Seth MacFarlane here.
“It’s their job to make fun of everyone. Get over it,”
Did they mock O’s ears? Now that would be series.
They also frequently target Christians, but I've never seen them make fun of Muslims...big shock.
Unlike South Park, those guys mock everyone, but for the most part seem to be libertarian and/or onservative in a lot of what they do.
And South Park actually attempted to mock Islam, but Comedy Central wouldn’t let them.
That's because they are cowards and not necessarily respectful of the latter. They know who not to offend if they want to keep their heads attached to their bodies.
Oh absolutely. There's nothing "respectful" about it, it's simply a matter of self-preservation. They can hit an easy target, appear to be "edgy," and move on without consequence (immediate consequence, that is). That's why I believe, for all the bravado of his animated soapboxes, Seth McFarlane is a pussy.
I saw those episodes. They were, ironically, making fun of “Family Guy”’s so-called “edginess” (as well as it’s crappy writing). “South Park” was not even going to make fun of Islam, they were going to show Mohammed standing in a doorway for a couple of seconds. That was it. The episode itself was about Fox censoring that scene in this fake episode of “Family Guy,” but Comedy Central ended up censoring the scene in “South Park.”
So Trey and Matt showed the utter hypocrisy right there for everyone to see. It was brilliant.
All we need is a few Obama children jokes and wait for the response. That would be fun.
I thought it was pretty tasteless.
I am waiting for them to come back on Palin with this:
“They are kooks, so I agree with Rush Limbaugh,” she said, when read a quote of Limbaugh calling liberal groups “retards.” “Rush Limbaugh was using satire”
It just seems like a constant ring-around-the-rosy ‘gotcha’ game that they are playing on Palin.
What kind of person attacks a mentally disabled infant?
an ethically disabled adult
“helps just by making her enemies look so heartless...here they are...”
Who are those two coprolites?
Indeed.
