Says Senate's Current Requirement of 60 Votes to Get Anything Done Represents Fundamental Shift in Congress
(CBS) The Senate's frequent use of the filibuster, a procedural tool used to block legislative progress, represents a "fundamental shift" in Congress, Vice President Joe Biden said today on "Face the Nation."
The Republican minority in the Senate has used the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to bypass, to block significant bills like the Democrats' health care reform package.

The Republican minority in the Senate has used the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to bypass, to block significant bills like the Democrats’ health care reform package.
Is this or is it not an out right LIE.
Disgusting.
Hmm. So what’s the Dems’ excuse for the ENTIRE YEAR before Scott Brown was elected?
LMAO!!!
Follow that statement to it's 'logical' conclusion:
"The Republican minority in the Senate has used the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to bypass, to block significant bills which has necessitated spending packages such the Louisiana Purchase or the Nebraska Kickback in order to get millions of Americans the health care they are now denied. This is money which would have otherwise created or saved thousands of jobs for Americans who not only worry about being denied medical care, but if the next meal comes from a can with a dog or cat on the label?"
The Dems couldn’t pass their own national health insurance plan when the Republicans could not have stopped them. Where’s the beef?
That’s just wrong on so many levels.
Once again, Biden shows how incredibly stupid he is. There has not been a single filibuster since 0bambi and his gang of thugs decided to wreck America. Why?, because the RATS have had a filibuster-proof majority since November 2008.
Better for the world to think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and dispell all doubts.
That’s why Reid had to buy the votes of DEMOCRATS!!
More than likely, you missed all the filibustering when Trent Lott was the majority leader and Tom Daschle was the minority leader.
The way it worked during those years was:
TRENT: Would it be O.K. to bring up SB 946?
TOM: We're gonna filibuster that, Trent.
TRENT: Alright, I'll drop it. How about SB 1131?
TOM: We'll filibuster.
TRENT: Won't bring it up then. Anything you won't filibuster?
TOM: In the interest of bi-partisanship, we'd entertain the appropriation bill. If, that is, you'd throw a little more pork South Dakota's way.
TRENT: Done.
Fact is, we'll never know how many times the Democrats "filibustered" under this arrangement. No filibuster was publicly announced; Lott simply never brought bills to the floor.
“Better for the world to think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and dispel all doubt.”
Problem is, about half of the voters will never be told that there have been no filibusters. They will align themselves with Biden’s lie, thinking it more proof of the perfidy of the “extreme right.”
None. THere have been a lot of cloture votes, because Harry Reid never works with the republicans, he often schedules cloture votes before he has even published the legislation.
But no legislation has been blocked yet by a filibuster. A few nomination votes have been held up by failed cloture votes, and Reid has refused to file for cloture on dozens of other nominees, fearing a floor debate.
Also, the types of bills being presented this past year were HUGE expansions of government, not your typical measured bills. Dozens of such bills have made it through without cloture, just as many judicial nominations have been voted on without a filibuster.
Liberal hyperbole of the day.
Seems to me that they had all summer and fall to pass their communist health care and energy tax bills if they wanted with a fillibuster-proof Senate and they didn't (thanks to the overwhelming uprising of we, the people). But somehow, with Brown in the Senate for a couple of weeks, we now have filibuster abuse...
Go figure...
Not unless it's brown, stinky sand. ;-)
