While not every airplane flight can have a federal air marshal on it, it may be possible that every flight could come equipped to disable potential air bombers like 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Detroit-bound Christmas Day bomber who has been indicted on six criminal counts including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder of 289 people. According to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA(AFA-CWA), alert flight attendants were able to thwart Abdulmutallabs terrorist intentions.
This week another flight attendant was able to use her highly trained skills and alertness to disable a possible mid-air threat from an unruly and quite possibly dangerous passenger. According to published news accounts US-Air flight attendant Lorin Gorman was able to effectively disable...

Disembowel?
the fatties on american cant get out of their own way much less do martial arts.. besides geritol is not paid for by their health care..
Cool....Kung Fu Stewardess....I saw that B-movie one time!! If a bomber is near me on the plane I don’t need martial arts training I’m going to KILL the terrorist! Esp. Knowing that barry and co. will probably want to give him rights and he won’t talk.....
Can stewardesses call on passengers to help subdue attackers so they don’t have to do it alone? Any stewardess that locks horns with a rowdy will probably have all the help she could ever want from red-blooded males by just saying “Help, please!”
There would be a problem with implementing that in policy. Out of each class of martial arts students, only a very few will work hard enough to gain adequate proficiency. Most students only want to limp-wristedly breeze through classes and pay for those pretty belts.
Over the years, I saw a couple of grudge/curiosity full contact matches between tournament competitors and full contact fighters. Each lasted a few seconds and ended with unconscious tournament fighters.
I’ll bet it was all the difference between “win a tournament thinking” and “win a fight-for-your-life thinking.”
what is a full contact fighter? like MMA ?
Your comment reminds me of a conversation I had some 20 years ago. A friend of mine was lamenting the fact that aviation.. and therefore its stewardesses.. was aging. We joked about how it was once "Fly me, I'm Wendy," and now (then) it was the sky-hags. The sky-hag situation certainly hasn't improved since!
i remember TWA flying a super connie out of Albuquerque and the Stewardess wow was she pretty.. never forget her.. i was very young .. still can hear the engines start.. we flew first class had real crystal, silver silver wear.. i wore a suit so did my dad .. what fun.. now it is like taking a buss..
Good story. If all flight attendants were adequately trained in martial arts, it would at least give them a better chance at disabling any would be terrorists.
However it is also unlikely that a terrorist would present a running start advantage by being high on marijuana as was the perp in this story.
Actually the Chinese airline Sichuan has been training their stewardesses in Kung Fu to deal with terrorists.
This is another one of those stories where we are encouraged to “leave it to the pros”, even if it’s some mythical martial arts trained flight attendant. In the cramped confines of an airliner, I doubt that the martials arts skills learned in most schools would be of any value. It’s literally a knife fight in a phone booth scenario where the most brutal fighter wins.
If some muzzie with a panty-bomb shows up on my flight, I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. If the “trained professionals” want to help, they are quite welcome!
The Chinese are coming up with all the good ideas lately.
