What happens? Well, it gets converted to the fundamental elements making up its components. For the most part that’s going to be water and aluminum, and a chunk of uranium used for the trigger.

Hmmm...what if the fuselage (or whatever it’s called) of the incoming missile is polished to a mirror finish?

Not exactly. The weapon was used against the booster rocket, NOT the incoming warhead. Like the Patriots being used against Saddam’s SCUDs, we hit the airframe and destroy the trajectory; ruining the targeting. The warhead WILL land somewhere, just not where it will do the enemy any good!
