I wonder what length of time UAH required before one is up for tenure? My hubby had to teach for three years at his workplace before he was eligible.
I am not sure if the tenure process is the same for all school. Anyone know?
Most place you choose to apply for tenure or not. You aren’t forced to apply. If you apply and then don’t achieve tenure status (jump through all the hoops), you lose your job. That is why people freak out when they don’t get tenure. Basically it means you’re fired.
University tenure period is typically 6 years. Family issues can buy you another year or two.
Being denied tenure is a difficult experience. I was denied twice but of course I did not take any actions against others. I found another job in a short time in both cases.
Depending on the university and discipline, tenure can be difficult to obtain. At top universities in strong departments, tenure is very difficult. You have to produce impressive levels of research and demonstrate good classroom skills. In some places, tenure decisions are heavily influenced by one or two individuals who can be swayed more by personal issues than professional merit.
