China on Friday demanded the White House cancel a meeting between US President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama, warning that already strained ties between the two powers would be damaged further.
Beijing reacted angrily to the White House announcement that Obama would next week receive the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, accused by China of seeking independence for his homeland.
"We firmly oppose the Dalai Lama visiting the United States and US leaders having contact with him," foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.
"We urge the US side to fully understand the high sensitivity of Tibet-related issues, and honour its commitment to recognise Tibet as part of China and to oppose 'Tibet independence'," he added.
"China urges the US... to immediately call off the wrong decision of arranging for President Obama to meet with the Dalai Lama... to avoid any more damage to Sino-US relations."
The two sides have clashed in recent weeks over a 6.4-billion-dollar US arms deal for Taiwan, with China accusing the United States of violating the "code of conduct between nations" by selling weapons to what it sees as Chinese territory.
Beijing has also been irked by Washington's support for Google after the web giant announced it would no longer abide by China's strict Internet censorship rules and could quit the country over "highly sophisticated" cyberattacks.Related article: China says it has 'no dissidents'
The foreign ministry angrily denied any involvement in the hacking of Gmail accounts and accused Washington of "double standards" after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lamented the restrictions on China's 384 million Internet users.
The White House invitation to the Dalai Lama, who will be in the United States for a week starting Wednesday, also comes as Obama tries to build an international consensus on sanctions against Iran.

Hmmm...it's not nice to upset our most favored debt-holder nation.
read this!
Five bucks says he geeks. No meeting. Any takers?
First one to respond gets the bet.
And when Obama caves to this demand, China will become ever more demanding.
I have to agree with you. But if 0 doesn’t meet with the Dalai Lama I think it is a d@mn shame.
Good luck trying to pass UN sanctions against Iran with China in this kinda mood.
I guess obie forgot to tell China he was going to scold the DL.
The Commies are becoming more demanding with each passing day. It had unleashed a diabolic diatribe against India over Dalai Lama’s visit to the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh which incidentally China deems to be a part of Occupied Tibet.
Your next lesson will be: Ours is a world that is governed by the aggressive use of force.
I would think that Obama will pull the old “We have decided to postpone the visit” bit.
Obama will say anything to get him over the “hump” in the road and right now Obama needs to improve China-US relations so he can get new UN sanctions supported by China and France against Iran for nuclear purposes.
“And when Obama caves to this demand, China will become ever more demanding.”
China is just testing whether the organ grinder’s monkey they bought really nows how to dance.
If Obama caves he’s done.
The new White House theme song;
I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves
Chorus:
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
(That’s the song I hear)
I’d like to see the world for once
(Let the world sing today)
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
That’s the song I hear
(That’s the song I hear)
Let the world sing today
(Let the whole wide world keep singing)
A song of peace that echoes on
And never goes away
(Repeat 1st stanza and Chorus)
Put your hand in my hand
Let’s begin today
Put your hand in my hand
Help me find a way
........(utterly disgusted)
This Sino-American relationship is feeling less like a partnership and more like a hostile takeover.
They’re probably just sick and tired of seeing him bow to people.
“This Sino-American relationship is feeling less like a partnership and more like a hostile takeover”
Oh...yeah...there’s a small little detail underlying our “strained” relationship with China....
What is it you ask? (small voice)
THE COMMIES OWN OUR VERY ASSES. IN FACT THEY EVEN OWN OUR ASSES’ ASSES!!!!! (very large voice)
LOL!!
I know schadenfreude is not a good thing, but it is so hard NOT to enjoy it now. If Obama had met the Dilia Lama the first time he was in the neighborhood, Beijing would have growled, but not much more.
This time, however, they are pretty confident they have the whip hand, and coming on top of the arms sales to Taiwan, they definitely feel like they are being dissed.
Since canceling the sales will be more of a egg-on-face than dissing the lama... guess what.
Mr. lama, sorry.
“Theyre probably just sick and tired of seeing him bow to people.”
I know I sure the heck am!
I don’t know...maybe he can’t help himself...
Maybe he’ll begin bowing to the Good Humor man that brings ice cream treats for the kiddies on the South lawn in the Summertime...
Maybe he’ll start bowing to the maid who turns down the covers for the narcissist in the Lincoln bedroom each evening...
Maybe he’ll begin bowing to the paper boy in the morning, especially if he can catch the paper in his teeth...
ENOUGH of the BOWING already!!!!!
So how’s that “free trade” thing working out?...
It’s not easy to dispell the aroma of personal weakness once the enemy has caught its scent.
