Villaraigosa plans new round of L.A. City Hall job cuts, says services will be fewer (3000 total?)

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he is planning a second major wave of City Hall job cuts, moving to eliminate between 1,200 and 2,000 positions to get the struggling city through the remainder of the calendar year.

Appearing at a luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Villaraigosa said the reductions would be sought for the fiscal year that starts July 1 — and come on top of the 1,000 jobs that he targeted last week for elimination.

Villaraigosa said the cuts would lead, at a minimum, to reduced library hours and parks and recreation programs. And he dismissed suggestions that he lacks the legal authority to slash the size of the city’s payroll.

“I can order layoffs, and I am,” he told the audience.

Well, considering the first 1000 layoffs have not yet been implemented, I dont know what to believe.

All unnecessary. Dims cut vital services to force citizens to vote for tax increases. They should instead cut welfare for illegals, drill for oil, cut union retirement benefits back to a reasonable level and control the border.

Forget it. It’s time to cut through the meat to get the cancer. Cut school for a year. There’s about four kids that care, and they’ll teach themselves anyway. Declare marshal law, looters, care theivs, arsonist shot on sight.

I am a book addict. They can shut down and burn to the ground every library. Book people can pay for their own books. Heck, the library are basically day care for kids and gramps and subsidies fiction reading for a dying population of book lovers that should be paying their own way.

In government speak, "Layoff" is different from "Job Cut". A "job" might be vacant for years. They could hire someone to fill the job but they don't. If they "cut" the job, it just means that nobody will fill it.

Governments will frequently offer sweet retirement packages to people to get them off the payroll. Then they'll give the job to someone else. And everyone at the city will play musical chairs going in and out of various "jobs".

It makes sense to them because the money comes out of different accounts. The city of Phoenix has had something like 7 different "job cuts" in the past 2 years, with almost nobody actually losing their job. Now they're at the point where the next round of "job cuts" will actually mean someone loses a job, or people get paid less money.
