Except, the movie etc never tell anyone that the reason Afghanistan was "abandoned" was, it was our side of the deal that got the Russians to pull out in the first place. The deal was, no Russian troops would remain on condition that we pulled direct aid to factions in the country. Reagan simply honored that deal. Pakistan moved in. It was Gorbachev who insisted we stay out of it, and he wouldn't have removed the Russian forces if we hadn't. Reagan made the right call.

That's right - Mr. Wilson was correct in his original assessment that the US needed to provide a continued presence in the form of aid and infrastructure, i.e., education, etc., to support the Afghani people. Obviously, that didn't happen, and imho, is a large part of the reason why we find ourselves in the mess in Afghanistan that we find today...
