The number of illegal immigrants in the United States fell by seven percent last year to 10.8 million, coinciding with the country's financial crisis, a Department of Homeland Security report said Tuesday.
The majority of the country's illegal immigrants come from Latin America, with 62 percent from Mexico (6.7 million), followed by those from El Salvador (530,000), Guatemala (480,000) and Honduras (320,000).
Together with Filipinos (270,000), Latin Americans accounted for 85 percent of all illegal immigrants in the United States in 2009, the DHS report said.
"The number of unauthorized residents declined by 1.0 million between 2007 and 2009, coincident with the US economic downturn," said the report, based on census data and extrapolations from the total foreign population in the country.
Of the nearly 11 million undocumented people living in the United States in January 2009, 37 percent, or four million, arrived since January 2000, 44 percent since the 1990s and 19 percent since the 1980s, the DHS said.
The cutoff date of January 1, 1980 in the DHS's estimated tally of illegal immigrants corresponds to a grandfather clause in the 1986 US immigration reform law that extended residency to anybody living in the United States prior to that date.

I guess there are 7% less jobs that Americans won’t do.
If they know this, what are they doing to get rid of them?
We should be seeing a constant stream of buses headed to the border. Raids on illegal employers and planes buzzing off to SA.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I am sorry, but there is simply no way they could know this. Common sense says some have left, but quantifying it is very difficult. I think this report is an attempt to soften up the voters for amnesty. It is reasonable to believe that there are still 30 million or so here. Amnesty would make them legal, make them voters, and give them the right to send for all of their relatives.
We now have Lou Dobbs working with ‘groups’ to find a path to citizenship for illegals who have been here for a while and have been good citizens.
HOW DISGUSTING I guess that means he’ll be running for political office as a dem sooner rather than later.
LOL. The talk as though they know how many illegals are really here.
Wondering if this relates to more to voter registration than actually cracking down on the businesses who hire these scum?
“7 percent fewer illegal immigrants last year”
93% too much.
Really? Color me dubious. And you know that how? It must be from the tight border security and immigration enforcement. Besides why would they leave? If jobs and economics are so great from where they came why are they here? Not to mention that 10.8 number is based on the bogus number of 12.
Who the hell would want to come to a country with no jobs, failing economy, and a socialist/communist/muslim dictator running it?
Even illegals aren't that dumb.
They can count them but not control them?
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!
Round em’ up and ship em’ back!
(my bumper sticker)
Why go to the effort to come to the U.S. when it is now led by people determined to make the U.S. no better than their country of origin?
why so long?
The truth is, they don't have a clue on how many illegals are in the country. These numbers (and those from the Center for Immigration Studies) are just wags, and do not comport with reality.
Anyone not in the cloistered halls of government or in the gated communities of politicians and journalists knows by just looking around them that the footprint of illegal aliens has grown drastically since the 2003-2004 period when we were told there were 12 million illegals here.
There may be a temporary lull due to the current recession, but the reduction is not from 11 million to 10.8, but like from 20 million to 19.8 million.
My numbers are just as good as anything from the politically driven DHS and Janet Napolitano who have stated that there goal is still “comprehensive immigration reform” (AKA amnesty and Democrat votes). These phony numbers are just a scam to make amnesty more palatable.
