Answering reporters' questions Tuesday after a meeting with congressional leaders of both parties, Obama said both sides have to give ground on health care. The American people want the problems of cost and coverage addressed and they don't want another year of wrangling in Congress, the president said.

The department said that letters it mailed a week ago to 49,352 Medi-Cal beneficiaries wrongly included each patient's Social Security number on their address labels.

...I don't believe malpractice reform is a silver bullet, but I've talked to enough doctors to know that defensive medicine may be contributing to unnecessary costs. So I'm proposing that we move forward on a range of ideas about how to put patient safety first and let doctors focus on practicing medicine. I know that the Bush administration considered authorizing demonstration projects in individual states to test these ideas.
