New report says illegal immigration population plummeted last year
Contra Costa Times (CA) ^ | 2/9/10 | Matt O'Brien

Posted on 02/09/2010 4:43:16 PM PST by ruralvoter

The number of illegal immigrants living in the United States dropped by 1 million people in two years, according to new estimates by the Department of Homeland Security.

The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007. If the official estimates are correct, not since 2005 has the population of illegal immigrants been as low as it was last year.

Some private researchers, however, are questioning the magnitude of the drop.

# Top countries of origin for illegal immigrants in the U.S.: Mexico: 6.65 million (up by 42 percent since 2000)
# El Salvador: 530,000 (up by 25 percent)
# Guatemala: 480,000 (up by 65 percent)
# Honduras: 320,000 (up by 95 percent)
# Philippines: 270,000 (up by 33 percent)
# India: 200,000 (up by 64 percent)
# South Korea: 200,000 (up by 14 percent)

States with the most illegal immigrants:
# California: 2.6 million (up by 3 percent since 2000)
# Texas: 1.68 million (up by 54 percent)
# Florida: 720,000 (down by 10 percent)
# New York: 550,000 (up by 1 percent)
# Illinois: 540,000 (up by 24 percent)
# Georgia: 480,000 (up by 115 percent)
# Arizona: 460,000 (up by 42 percent)

Even the illegals don’t want to live in a country where Obama is President. :)

How on earth can these people even know the number of illegals living here when they can't control our borders?
I mean, some estimates already had the illegals at 20 million, and that was during the Bush/McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill push in 2007. Since then the Mexicans have continued to invade this country in great numbers every day, so how can the number then fall to 10.8 million then?

They’re even smarter than Obama.

Most of the illegals from countries overseas are actually ones with expired H1-Bs and L-1s. They are easy to track, as they are documented and fingerprinted at the ports of entry.

Isn’t it amazing how they KNOW how many are here and do NOTHING to stop it?

Gee, think that will reduce national hell care costs since most of it is aimed at ILLEGALS ?

Exactly.
Take out the huge healthcare costs associated with illegals, plus another 10% cost reduction from tort reform, plus the ability to buy insurance across state lines, and you are talking hundreds of billions already saved from health care costs right there, even before a crack down on fraud and inefficiencies.

This is one facet of the immigration issue that is not often talked about: the economy determines is largely determinant of the number of illegal immigrants. When things are booming, they roar in and, in some cases, add to the pace of economic activity without it affecting too much the availability of jobs. When the economy tanks and jobs are scarce for everyone, many illegal immigrants go home, thus leaving whatever jobs there are for those who are here legally.

When I first moved to OK....in 97-98...I rarely saw people of Spanish decent.

And I've some experience in recognizing potential illegal So. American folks...after living in SoCal since the 60's....

That said....I noticed 7-8 years ago here...that there were most surely illegal aliens here...working in the region. Mostly service type jobs..labor intensive.

Ticked me off to no end...because I saw the same thing happen in SoCal.....

FWIW-

Good to see a decline in Florida. Now, let’s see if all the other states can have a decline.

Yeah the illegals are leaving to find better opportunities in Mexico. /sarc

None of them have left....they’re probably drawing unemployment checks and all sorts of other gubbermint give aways.

Why would the invasion slow down or people leave when the gubbermint tap is wide open?
