Specter was in a tight primary race in 2004 with Pat Toomey, who was a much better candidate IMO. W supported and campaigned for Specter and as a result Specter narrowly won the primary.
W's support of Specter over Toomey was stupid because Specter had gone out of his way to thwart W's agenda before the election and continued to do so after he won reelection to the Senate.

GWB and Rick Santorum campaigned for Arlen against a conservative Republican candidate in the primary. And that’s one of those things I’ll never forget.
