It may be freezing cold in Washington tonight, but there are plans for a hot time at the White House. With a new snowstorm moving into the D.C. metro area, the president and first lady decided to move up a major music event that was actually scheduled for tomorrow evening.
Theyll take the chill off invited guests with some warm music memories from the civil rights era, served up by some of Americas greatest talent.
The 2010 White House Music Series kicks off tonight with a star-studden lineup, including Yolanda Adams, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson and Seal.
There will also be music from The Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir and The Freedom Singers.
The concert is part of the White House celebration of Black History Month, and guest speakers include Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah. Along with the music from the civil rights era, there will be readings from famous writings and speeches of the time.
The president will open the event in the East Room at 8 p.m., and although it will be streamed live to your house on whitehouse.gov, there will no doubt be some bundled up fans braving the cold near 1600 Pennsylvania, hoping to catch of glimpse of the of the famous performers as they arrive.
The concert will be televised at 8 p.m. Thursday on public broadcasting stations nationwide.
No problem. I’ll pay for it. gag and barf.
It would be good to know who's footing the bill for all this very expensive line-up. I do love Joan Baez's singing, though. I don't know what her voice sounds like nowadays but it was beautiful way back when. It's a shame she's such a lefty.
They can’t make it to work because of the weather, but they can make it to the White House to party?
Any chance of someone sneaking past Secret Service tonight?
Will the Salahis be there?
Of course!
Or:
The Snow must go on....
LOL...
Ooh! We’re going to be snowed in! Wee! It’s a sleepover!
Why not Sly Stone....Boom, Laka, Laka, Laka?
Celtic gal - love the name. I’m with you all the way.
There are a lot of desperate people in this country right now who will not look kindly upon this kind of tasteless excess. Want to celebrate black history month? Why not invite a high school choir singing gospel? The kids would be thrilled, and the angry peasants reading this would not be thinking bad thoughts.
now how come no one is hopping mad and claiming that menu to be racial?
Global Warming guru Algore wearing his ever present Nobel medal is seen here en-route to an important scientific conference in Nassau hosted by the UN/IPCC where he was to be the keynote speaker.
Topics on the agenda were to have included Finding a Good Bail Bondsman, Not ALL Criminal Lawyers Are Sharks, Changing Careers for Dummies, You Want Fries With That?, How To Encrypt Emails, The Best Prison Jobs, Getting Along With Your Cellmate and Getting Used to Sleeping On Your Back.
A sudden and unfortunate blast of what the scientist in charge of the conference termed global warming caused the meeting to be rescheduled until Algore can be thawed some time next Spring assuming there will BE one.
Our reporter has learned that the influential conservative web site Free Republic has launched a contribution drive to rent a freezer locker in which to keep Gore for the 10 to 15 years estimated it will take for the so-called mainstream media to begin covering the Climategate story.
And the phrase “Let them eat cake” keeps running through my head...
We’re going to need many more guillotines.
With all due respect.
Bourgeois Blues lyrics
Me and my wife went all over town
And everywhere we went people turned us down
Lord, in a bourgeois town
It’s a bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
Well, me and my wife we were standing upstairs
We heard the white man say’n I don’t want no niggers up there
Lord, in a bourgeois town
Uhm, bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
Home of the brave, land of the free
I don’t wanna be mistreated by no bourgeoisie
Lord, in a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
Well, them white folks in Washington they know how
To call a colored man a nigger just to see him bow
Lord, it’s a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
I tell all the colored folks to listen to me
Don’t try to find you no home in Washington, DC
‘Cause it’s a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
With all due respect to the people who fought for civil rights, that doesn’t sound like much of a hot night to me.
Are you kidding? No one in the media will criticize NBC. One of “us” can’t be racist by definition, can they be?
And your point is?
