Although I celebrate the Oscar nomination for Colin Firth, undisputed king of simmering internal conflict, Im concerned about his wife Livia. Im not sure she will cope, not after the Screen Actors Guild Awards when, just hours before the ceremony, her dress woven from milk yes, milk didnt fit, and her clutch bag encrusted in ring-pulls clashed with her gold vegetarian shoes. Undeniably, as her Vogue blog put it, this was a near disaster.
Thankfully, a tragedy of Haitian proportions was averted by Livias high-speed thinking. She rang up Tom Fords tailor Thank you, Mario. Thank you! and ditched the bag, made from cans reclaimed from rubbish dumps in Brazilian favelas, for one by Stella McCartney. Phew. It isnt easy being the wife of an A-list star when youve made it your personal mission to travel the globe attending red-carpet functions in ethical fashions.
Well, its not that hard actually. In New York Livia finds wonderful sustainable shoes and in LA is manicured with vegan nail polish is the regular type made from meat? Who knew! attended by all manner of eco-stylists. Excitedly, she posts: Is this the start of a completely sustainable wardrobe? Has anybody actually managed to achieve that? Fashionably? And this is a woman who studied for a PhD.
