WASHINGTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate dropped unexpectedly in January to 9.7 percent from 10 percent while employers shed 20,000 jobs.
The Labor Department says the rate dropped because a survey of households found the number of employed Americans rose by 541,000. The job losses are calculated from a separate survey of employers.
The report also included an annual revision to the estimates of total payrolls, which showed there were 930,000 fewer jobs last March than previously estimated. The department also revised down its estimates for April through October of last year, adding another 433,000 job losses.
November was revised up, however, to show a gain of 64,000 jobs.
All told, the department says the Great Recession has eliminated 8.4 million jobs. That's the most of any recession since World War II as a proportion of total payrolls.

When pollsters do this, they tell you what the margin of error is. How come the government doesn't do the same thing?
Never mind, I already know the answer.
What they’re not telling us, however, is that when people’s unemployment benefits run out and when people “drop out” by ceasing to search for jobs period, this all goes into the equations they use to calculate U3 unemployment as “credits.” Perversely, if half a million people give up and stop looking for jobs because they are discouraged about not finding something after 18 months, this helps to drop the unemployment rate.
Yeah. They do.
I've been surfing the net, and this balloon isn't going anywhere. Even the most radical leftists don't believe it.
This could be Obomas "OK. I wasn't really being that truthful, but...but.... " moment.
OK, I think that I understand how they did this.
First step was to move the goal posts. That’s this bit: “The report also included an annual revision to the estimates of total payrolls, which showed there were 930,000 fewer jobs last March than previously estimated.” That moves the number of jobs for that month and ALL FOLLOWING MONTHS down by 930,000.
Now do your survey and see that there are 389,000 fewer jobs. Ah, but you’ve magically back-dated a revision down of the number of jobs out there, so that 389,000 decrease can be pimped as a 930,000 minus 389,000 equals 541,000 increase!
And PRESTO, the Obamessiah magically created 541,000 jobs! It’s a MIRACLE!!!
Big Brother has RAISED the Chocolate Ration to 25 grams...
Ultimately the fault here lies with this young mans employer.. It probably is for the best since working there would have been a less then pleasant experience.
The young are far smarter then the older folks will ever be. If you want proof of this simply ask a recent college grad.
It’s anecdotal but I had a small retail business years ago and had working for me 6-9 people depending on the tie of years. I owned the business 15 years and during that time I always sought t higher older people (55 and up of possible) because I found them to have by far the strongest work ethic. They almost never called in sick, they showed up on time or earlier and left at closing or later. They asked for nothing and simply did their jobs.
“Yup, and the Chocco ration is going up to 25 grams.”
Doubleplusgood. Time for Victory gin.
I smell B.S.(and I don’t mean boy scouts!).
I have been on DU. Even there a lot of posts say these stats are a load of crap.

A sharp increase in the number of people giving up looking for work helped to depress the jobless rate. The number of ‘discouraged job seekers’ rose to 1.1 million in January from 734,000 a year ago.
10.6% (U3), and 18% (U6).

“I recently interviewed for a job at a local farm coop in Kansas. The hiring manager was a punk 25 year old kid... “
If anyone is interested in buying a farm coop in about 3 or 4 years, here is your chance. It will need some improvements, but it will probably be had at a bargain.
FWIW concho, I’m only 36, but in my experience, its better to not have a job working FOR an idiot like that. I know times are tough, but hang in there. You should offer consulting services to the punk right away ;-). That way you are working *with* him and can be brutally honest as to how arrogant this person is.
Great mini-essay, it could be the basis of a published article at Townhall or any of the other “name” sites.
That’s a huge drop after it was supposed to increase.
Probably negate the political impact today of the massive gain in jobs lost unfortunately.
10.6% (U3), and 18% (U6).
Apparently these are the unadjusted numbers for the UE rate. Pretty sad.
I’m sure the Prez called Gibbsy and asked him to call up BLS to say please oh please massage the numbers so he doesn’t appear to be a bigger failure than he already is.
I call BS. How can they say that there was many more jobs lost than originally expected(unexpected again)and at the same time claim the unemployment rate dropped. This is all smoke and mirrors by the dimwits to try to save their a**.
If he used the exact quote saying that he wasn’t going to hire any “old people”, isn’t that grounds for an age discrimination lawsuit? I know he could hire whomever he wants but to blatantly state that in front of you is shockingly demeaning to say the least(not to mention possibly illegal).
That’s good to hear that the libs don’t even believe it, I figured they’d be their usual gloating delusional libs.
