More than 90 Maryland homeowners with beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay say theyre now staring at an ugly reality. The structures are perched on an eroding cliff, but the property owners cant do anything to stop the soil from wearing away because of a rare insect.
The Puritan tiger beetle is an Endangered Species, and the majority of the known beetles live in the cliffside underneath Chesapeake Ranch Estates. Residents say its not just a matter of losing their homes, its literally a life and death situation.
In 1996, a landslide killed a 12 year old girl. Since then, some residents have awoken to find large sections of their property have literally vanished into the Bay.

You make your bet, you take your chances. Life. But, in all reality screw the bug.
Ping!
What, if anything, has been tried to spread the beetle into other areas. And, would it be a pest if that succeeded?
They had that on TV earlier tonight. It is disgusting that a bug takes precedence over people’s homes. These are bizarro world values enacted into law.
How do we know that this beetle doesnt exist in other places?

The east coast is sharing the pain equally with Californian’s. Maybe if enough folks realize how destructive the Endangered Species Act is to property rights and the economy, they will revise it to be less draconian and more incentive-based.
Its called wealth distribution! Rich folks losing their homes.
If the beetles live in the cliff and the cliff is washing away, aren’t the beetles homes washing away just like the home owner’s homes are?
It is imperative that we shore up these cliffs so that we may save this endangered species home!
First, Libs all support the theory of evolution. Therefore, if the beetles aren’t fit to survive in that changing environment they deserve to die. Second, it is the taxpayer that pays the salary of all those people working in all those government departments. They need a reminder of who they work for. Taxpayers need to band together and tell their employees to toe the line or join the unemployed.
*sigh* this is ridiculous. This is worse than ridiculous. Take some of the poor beetles out and bring them to some other location if you must. Then KILL all the rest. Yes, brutally murder them. Thank you.
The save-the-beetles thing is kooky, but so is building expensive homes on unstable soil on bayside cliffs. It makes sense for beetles to build beetle-houses there (which I assume are little bitty caves in the soil). It does not make sense for people to build people-houses there.
It sounds like that poor little girl was killed long before anyone proposed shore-up measures, which was what brought up the beetle issue, so her death was attributable to parental and developer stupidity, and not to over-zealous enviroweenies.
I’m sure the bugs could be used as a snack or as a source for an aphrodisiac. Maybe they even taste like chicken.
Save the endangered homes!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I’d just get rid of the ESA altogether.
Sage grouse are tasty, I hear.
Agreed in all points.
