While speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast, President Obama mispronounced the word "Corpsman" as "corpse-man."

And everybody pronounces Favre "Farv," including Brett. Like "nucular," I think it's just harder to pronounce it the right way. "Corpse-man" is different, since the correct pronunciation is easier, and I agree with other posters that Obama's pronunciation shows an ignorance of military culture.
I believe that the silent "ps" in corps comes from French.
