The Federalists, so loved by conservatives, were the big government taxers and social engineers of their era. They seem tame by today's standards, but back then, real conservatives OPPOSED them. So you're suggesting that the "real conservatives" were more in agreement with Mr. Jefferson & Mr. Madison, rather than the Federalists?

Madison and Jefferson were for the Federalists before they were against them. Madison published essays as a Federalist. Jefferson supported Madison from afar. By the time they started opposing the Federalists, it was too late.
