I’m pretty surprised, but Coats is honest and conservative, and we can’t afford to turn up our nose at anyone who is either of those two, never mind both!
Would I have preferred that Coats had run for reelection in 1998? Of course. Would I cast Coats aside and support Hostettler or Stutzman just because Coats made a mistake 12 years ago? Of course not.
Let’s see how Coats does back on the stump. My initial reaction, though, is cautious optimism—this could be the candidate that can defeat Bayh after Pence and Rokita gave him a pass.
