I remember Dan Coats. I like him much better than Dick Lugar. One thing I liked about Dan was his thing being against East Coast trash coming to Indiana. This would be an interesting race. I think it is long overdue for Evan bayh to be fired. All I remember of him is he was a carpetbagger from Washington DC when he ran for Indiana governor. He tried to conjure an image of being conservative especially knowing what happened to Daddy. But since he has been in Washington, his true colors has come out.

On Mitch Daniels, I think he would be better for a run as POTUS.

He was afraid he’d lose to Bayh so he didn’t bother.

No, I’ll stick with Hostettler, Coats has little less than 2 weeks to get his signatures in, anyway (I think it’s a desperate move by the establishment, honestly), because all 4 others in the race are solid Conservatives (it’s just that no one thought Bayh was vulnerable untill a couple polls came out recently; after he voted for The President’s budget, Stimulus plan, and Health Care)!!

“Maybe just healthy disgust.”

It was that “Healthy Disgust” that caused him to quit the Senate in the first place....

He was sick of the constant election money chase, among other things...

That he’s willing to do this now, knowing he doesn’t NEED the job, at a great time of American need, says a whole hell of a lot about him.

Might just be time to saddle up again for me!!

Let's say this race would be making up for not running in 1998.

Geez, with most of these Congresscrooks you can't drag them out of office, so I have a hard time being too upset when one leaves on his own.

i say get hostettler into bayh’s seat, wait until 2012 and have mitch kick lugar to the curb and get pence in the governors office. in the meantime we must also get rid of brad ellsworth. i vote for sending him to siberia or feeding him to the animals at the indy zoo, but that’s just me.

Ellsworth isn’t nearly as dangerous as Closet Radical Muslim Andre’ Carson, or Baron “I don’t care what the voters think!” Hill.

Another thing is the problem of age. He is 67. Even ignoring his cowardice from ‘98, that’s getting ridiculous to restart your career in the Senate. Pence or Rokita should’ve run, and it’s inexcusable that they aren’t. I can’t rate Coats as a first-tier candidate, either. It will have been 18 years since he last ran a race, it’s ridiculous.

Pence, maybe, but Rokita I was a bit wary of. He scuttled off to that Congressional race pretty quickly, and I don't think I'd root for him in that race.

66, 67, he's tanned, rested and ready! And besides, I prefer the Wayne Allard types who serve a term or two and return to private life.

not as dangerous but just as annoying. he simply refuses to listen to his constituents. but it’s okay we can feed all of them (carson, hill and ellsworth) to the lions.

What it screams is HONESTY....

Exactly. The fact he retired in 98 should bode well for his “sacrifice” to come back out of retirement to serve when the need is greatest and help prevent sopcialism.

Don’t remember much about him as Senator, don’t really care at this point so long his tagline is R.

Would I have preferred that Coats had run for reelection in 1998? Of course. Would I cast Coats aside and support Hostettler or Stutzman just because Coats made a mistake 12 years ago? Of course not.

Let’s see how Coats does back on the stump. My initial reaction, though, is cautious optimism—this could be the candidate that can defeat Bayh after Pence and Rokita gave him a pass.

The Democrats have skeletons in their closets. Republican skeletons actually cut out the middle man, escape the closet, and run for office themselves.

I always liked Dan Coats. He’s a solid conservative and he kept his campaign promises when he made it to the Senate.

As for retiring in 1998...it’s probably true that the ascendancy of Bayh played a factor. Evan (for reasons that mystify me to this day) was enormously popular in Indiana and would have been tough to beat.

At the same time, though, Coats has long been an advocate of term limits and spoke about moving on more than one occasion during his Senate years. I’m of the opinion that he would likely have retired even without a strong challenger. I would also speculate that if he does challenge and defeat Bayh this November, he’ll choose to serve for only one term.

Daniels will run for POTUS in ‘12. I’d bet the ranch on it.

He’s a darkhorse, but he’d have a great chance at it.

The absolute safest Dem in the 2010 elections for the Senate was Bayh.

Whoever said that was a moron. Babs Milkulski, Chucky Schumer and Daniel Inouye in their heavily rat states would rate the safest rats on any sane person's list.

Look at what you copied in my post it said “2010 elections.” I agree with you but based on who is up in 2010 - Bayh was the safest.

I think if Schumer was running in 2010 - Pataki could beat him.

Schumer IS up for reelection in 2010, along with Mikulski and Inouye.

I still would have put a couple other Dems as safer than Bayh before the Coats candidacy, such as Pat Leahy.

One source for 2010 races
