“You’d also have to take out several other counties in northern Illinois like Will, Lake, and Dekalb.”
Lake for sure. Will is getting more liberal, and Dekalb only trends liberal because of the university (there are not many people in Dekalb County who are not associated in some way with NIU).
Ronald Reagan said IL is so liberal that it would be a miracle if he won 40 percent of the vote there in the 1976 primary. But IL never voted for GA Jimmuh, probably a regional prejudice thing.
Very similar to Massachusettes.
Just what the GOP needs, another don’t ask don’t tell homo in the Senate. We just got rid of one, would like to get rid of the other one, and now the GOP are recruiting this one? Pray for a Dem win.
In Illinois he is.
They backed Kirk, so said his opponent on Hannity's radio show.
“Once he wins Obama’s seat, he will be declared by the media as a foaming-at-the-mouth far-right extremist.”
Bingo!
“I wonder which candidate the RNC backed.”
Kirk, but quietly.
Chicago is typical, no different than say Madison. Union owned votes bought and sold. Illinois is a blue state and is viewed as such nationally. Brown and Kirk come from the same mold. Kirk just has a voting record. Tea Parties will be back in force as this election cycle heats up. Not every conservative candidate will draw national support. Brown was a chance to stick it in Obama’s eye, he is no Hughes type conservative either.
Hughes got into the race too late, or at least got publicised too late.
Typically, I'm on top of things like these, but *I* hadn't even heard of Patrick Hughes until just a week ago. It was reported that Illinois Republicans didn't know who he was, even. As a result, he didn't get the exposure and money bombs that Scott Brown and Doug Hoffman did.
I have a strong feeling that, Illinois not withstanding, if Hughes had been known a month ago, this race would have ended very differently.
As it stands, my opinion is that the upcoming general election is one the GOP should lose. I'd rather have a Democrat in this seat who is fighting us from the front than an abject DIABLO who is fighting us from behind. We'll pick up plenty of other seats, no reason to sell our souls over this one.
Lake was Conservative until the housing bubble brought yuppie liberals north. Lake had lower taxes (gas was cheaper on the Lake side of Lake-Cook Rd) and better schools. Liberals moved in taxes went up and schools pushed a gay agenda, conservatives fled to Kenosha. It was amazing to watch, people moved to Deerfield for the quality of life and then voted in policies that they fled in Cook county?
I think a person should have to meet some standards of the national platform. This is ridiculous! I understand the argument that people can agree to not agree on a few issues, but this guys record should not allow him in the party.
“* Support womans right to choose; along with family planning.
* Voted YES on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines.
* Voted YES on allowing human embryonic stem cell research.
* Voted NO on restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions.
* Voted NO on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime.
* Voted NO on funding for health providers who dont provide abortion info.
* Voted NO on banning Family Planning funding in US aid abroad.
* Voted NO on federal crime to harm fetus while committing other crimes.
* Rated 100% by NARAL, indicating a pro-choice voting record.”
IOW, Lincoln Chaffee, Jr.
If he happens to win in November, look for him to jump to the dems, first chance.
I remember the IL GOP of Phil Crane. So long ago, it seems.
“One would have to go south of I-80 to even begin seeing some conservative areas of Illinois, but they are out there, just the same.”
Along the Lake Michigan route, the only real conservative community seems to be Winthrop Harbor, just south of the WI border. Even the moneyed Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities are packed with libs — just the rich variety.
To many people here don't get that you cannot elect a real conservative in Illinois, or Massachusetts for that matter. RINO’s are a necessary evil in these areas. But if you live in a more conservative area and you have a moderate congress critter, then that's where the problem lies and that's where it can be fixed.
I was in Cook County on business late last year, something like a 10.5% tax rate on my beer and burger. I asked the barmaid why they put up with it, she was stunned at the question, clueless.
Same as in the 2008 primary season. The GOP rino strategy is to have multiple conservatives split the conservative vote and hand the victory to the McCain wing of the party.
If the conservatives remaining in the republican movement don’t see that, and find a fix for it, then they will always be on the outside looking in.
A concerted conservative effort by one conservative candidate would have changed the entire dynamic of this contest.
More proof that 2010 may not be “our” year after all
So long as we continue to elect anyone-but-a-Dem, seems we will continue to allow the Republican party to be run by PROGRESSIVE Republicans. IMO, Scott Brown should never have been our only option, nor supported.
