IIRC,

past great eruptions have resulted in so much ash in the air that essentially, sunlight struck the surface of the earth enough less that days were shorter, nights longer

Isn’t that true?

that would fit the first part of the Scripture.

If the ash also shielded to some degree from the destructiveness of some types of rays . . . from extreme solar flares or some such . . . that might refer to the last part of that Scripture . . .

‘else no flesh would be saved.’

Vot you tink SunkenCiv?

What is often understood as prophecy appears to be referencing disasters which have already happened. There have been claims of supereruptions of this or that volcano, and the longer ago it is said to have taken place, generally the bigger the eruption is said to have been. It’s perfectly possible there have been world climate changing eruptions that were non-trivial — having pretty sunsets from Krakatoa doesn’t count, and there’s no solid connection with the so-called “year without a summer” — but my view is volcanic eruptions have dire effects locally, but those fall off dramatically with distance. As one-off catastrophic events go, impacts of space debris also have varying effects based on size and energy — but it doesn’t take a very big rock to cause more destruction than literally all the volcanic eruptions ever, combined. There’s always been a volcano or two going off somewhere or other on Earth, going back to its beginning, so the localities involved are all over — but large impacts from space have caused mass extinctions, and no volcano has ever done that.

don’t know much about scripture, but the plagues etcin Egypt are commonly ascribed to the Thera eruption which happened aroun those times.

“past great eruptions have resulted in so much ash in the air that essentially, sunlight struck the surface of the earth enough less that days were shorter, nights longer

Isn’t that true?”

Yep. Pintabora did that in 1991.

“If the ash also shielded to some degree from the destructiveness of some types of rays . . . from extreme solar flares or some such . . . that might refer to the last part of that Scripture . . .

‘else no flesh would be saved.’”

Don’t know about that, but highly doubtful - unless lots of metalic compounds with copper or iron were in the ash, but then that would only shield from the least harmful EM emmisions.

Gamma, X-Ray and other wave lengths would go through the ash, and throught the Earth
