If this goes up even as a small caldera eruption then the US/Canada looses the bread basket of the Midwest. Our cities would run out of food in a matter of weeks. While the rest of the world may cheer in the beginning, without the food aid we provide large parts of Africa and Asia would starve.

Food riots would breakout in most US cities east of the Rockies. Clean water would also be hard to come by. Rivers would be choked with ash; the increased weight would rip bridges off their pilings making overland travel nearly impossible. Supplies to major cities would have to come by sea if anyone sends us some.

Air travel would be difficult in many areas of the US and impossible for several weeks in the Midwest. Depending on how long the eruption lasts.

The ash cloud would cover the globe; crop yields around the world would drop, especially in non industrialized nations.

The eruption would kill hundreds of thousands of people in matter of hours or days. The resulting social upheaval of having the US removed so quickly as the producing and military superpower in the world would kill billions.

It may not be Armageddon, but it’s a darn good preview.

"I have learned through bitter experience... that these decisions are not to be made lightly. Back a few years ago I would have bet you a million bucks...that Mammoth Mountain was about to go up. We began to talk about the possibility of putting that town on alert. Thank God the mountain didn't go up, but the damage had already been done.

The word leaked out that the U.S.G.S. Had expressed concern. So the tourists panicked and stayed away. The real estate values plummeted, and the town nearly went bankrupt. Consequently, I'm now a lot more cautious...when it comes to even talking about putting a town on alert. "

I’ve been doing quite a bit of web research on Yellowstone today and here is the bottom line for me. Three swarms in the last year all large indicate something is going on. Ground lift further indicate something is going on. Now the thing to watch for, and hopefully we will not see it is numerous quakes of greater then mag 3. If we see numerous quakes of greater then mag 3 I am going to run to Kroger and spend a thousand bucks on canned food. Please put me on a ping list if you have one. thanks.

I just finished teaching a unit in Earth Science class (6th graders) on volcanoes. Some of the kids were really freaked out over the caldera in Yellowstone.

They wouldn’t tell us when they are on yellow alert.
I am so slow it shocks me.

Take a look at these two sites:
You can see on Yellow alert status the public doesn’t need to be informed.
after what happened at Long Valley (mammoth) it is very likely they will not.

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/factsheets/LongValley/

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/alertsystem/index.php

then look at their statement again:
”An earthquake swarm continues on the northwest edge of Yellowstone Caldera. There is still no indication of premonitory volcanic or hydrothermal activity. As such, the Volcanic Alert Level remains at Normal.”

In other words no change in surface temperatures which would be highly unlikely when it was still 6 miles down and there is definitely no new vents.

those two signs are indications of “Strong evidence of magma movement at shallow depth.” which is red alert.

given that they could still between strong unrest and Intense unrest(yellow alert) it would be there call.

Just the kind of scenario Obama would use to suspend the November 2010 elections, declare martial law, and then we never have 2012 Presidential elections. Or 2016 . . . Or 2020 . . . .

The destruction of America's heartland on a scale that the commies in Obamaland dream of.

I wish the caldera was very close to Chicago and the white hut.

If this blows it should fix unfunded liabilities in most states.

Nope. Can’t erupt. The EPA hasn’t issued a permit. That settles that. Move along, now, folks...(/s, as if...)
