Walesa's Warning

Leaders: The champion of Polish freedom tells America it's no longer that shining city on a hill. As it slouches toward socialism, he warns, those yearning to breathe free in the world can no longer look to the U.S. for help.

They were the giants of their age. Together, President Ronald Reagan, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II and a little known shipyard worker named Lech Walesa stood up to Soviet communism and brought freedom to the captive nations of Europe.

Last Friday, Walesa was in Chicago campaigning for a GOP gubernatorial candidate in the Illinois primary who happened to be Polish. Arguably the father of Polish democracy, Walesa knows a little bit about tyranny, socialism and the slippery path to both, and came to warn us about the path we've been on.

In a press conference, Walesa commented on an America that seemingly apologizes for everything these days, cajoles rather than confronts the thugs of the world and is embarked on a path to shackle beyond redemption the free economy that led the Free World to victory.

He no longer thinks we are the last best hope for mankind.

"The United States is only one superpower. Today they lead the world. Nobody has doubts about it, militarily," the Polish leader said. "They also lead economically, but they're getting weak.

Walesa led the Solidarity movement in Poland. He was in a sense a community organizer, but not in the mold of a Saul Alinsky. He sought to liberate his people, not control them.

Amen!

Takes a person who's lived the Socialist/Communist lie to tell you like it is. These 20 somethings who think it's cool to wear their Che T-shirts and say, "I'm a Marxist" (as if that's cool), ought to talk with Lech. He would tell them a thing or two.

Seeing the photo of Lech reminds me of a recent Russian immigrant after Clinton was reelected in 96. She said to me, (with great emphasis) "How could the people of America vote for a socialist?" I told her I hadn't but a lot of people in America really didn't understand socialism. She then went on and on about socialism and communism and what it did to Russia, etc. Would have been a great You Tube video!

Lech Walesa for U.S. president! If 0bozo the kenyan commie pig usurper qualifies as U.S. pres____ent, then surely we could nominate Lech Walesa for our nominee. Anyone with a smidgeon of brains, decency & common sense would be better than 0bozo the traitor!

A cool guy but too bad he never learned English.

He's also right on the money but we'll start changing that in 2010 and 2012.

This is very sad.

Thank you, Lech Walesa, for your service in the cause of freedom.

It is one thing for us Freepers to think we see what is going on and to be uspset about it. After all, even smart people can misinterpret events, and even smart people can make collective errors in judgement.

It is something else entirely for people who have lived through what we see coming to start speaking out. I’m seeing more and more of this lately, and they agree with our dire sense of the direction of America.

Nobody knows tragedy and misery like those who have lived it. Will the American electorate take heed? I fear - no, expect - not.

What then?

Mr. Walesa, I’m afraid you speak the truth.

I've got a mixed opinion about this.
On one hand, anyone can share their opinion on general state of affairs in different country.
On the other hand I wouldn't like President Walesa to tell other people what to do or force them to share his attitude.
He IS right, but as long as Americans won't live through commie hell, they might not understand Walesa, or what is worst... misinterpret his point of view.
As a Pole, I tell you guys... socialism sucks.
