Gingrich: I was wrong to endorse Scozzafava By Eric Zimmermann - 02/01/10 03:42 PM ET

Newt Gingrich says he regrets endorsing Dede Scozzafava in the hotly contested primary for the NY-23 congressional district in November.

Scozzafava was criticized by many national Republicans for being too liberal. She eventually dropped out of the race and endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, who eeked out a victory.

"She turned out to be a huge disappointment, and she turned out not to be frankly a loyal Republican," Gingrich told an interviewer in New Hampshire this weekend.

The former speaker added that conservatives who criticized his endorsement at the time "had the better of that argument."

Gingrich said he didn't realize how "radical" Scozzafava was when he endorsed her. Conservatives lambasted her for supporting gay marriage and card check, among other liberal positions.

"She had some positions that were far more radical than I realized at the time, and I think in retrospect it was probably a mistake," he said.

And Sean has an uncanny ability to cozy up to RINOs on his show (i.e., Arnold, Rudy, Newt, Mitt, etc.) and then wonders why the GOP is losing.

What a tool.

Newt — you’ve been wrong more than you’ve been right. It’s time for you to go home and stay there and retire from the public scene.

Newt Gingrich destroyed what little credibility he still had with conservatives when he stupidly endorsed Dede Scozzafava in the New York 23rd congressional district race. Whatever his rational, be it ignorance or poor judgment, Newt showed his 'true colors' and cemented his position as just another RINO that is undermining the country and the Republican party with Democrat-Lite policies, positions and attitudes. Newt's political career is pretty much over, now. He just doesn't realize it...but he will.

I still like Sean Hannity's relentless Obama-bashing (based on facts) but his obsequious attitude toward RINO politicians such as "Mister Speaker" is getting annoying....very annoying. Sean needs to get out more, look at the political landscape and realize that RINOs like Newt Gingrich are no longer important or even relevant in today's conservative political climate.

I think that the toe-sucker, Dick Morris, is way over-exposed on Fox News.

Kinda like not reading a bill that you are about to vote "yea" on.

Were you also wrong to sit on the bench with Nancy and lie to us all about global warming?

Newt has seen his best days way back when.

Newt in his college professor days would have never have tolerated such a poor reserach effort that he conducted on Scozzafava from on his students!

Power & the limelight has made him intellectually lazy as well as dishonest!

Newt needs to accept he will never be president. He had a “window of opportunity” right after his fall if he had left DC gone back to Georgia (or Pennsylvania, anywhere away from DC!) and built a constituency, stayed in touch with the grassroots. He didn't do it, he made a bad choice and then proceeded to compound it.
For someone who claimed to be such a Futurist its interesting how he fell back into the old-style politico mold of all power & knowledge flows from the center, from a political elite in DC.
Well that's changing, he jumped on the wrong horse, he has had numerous opportunities to jump off he didn't. He might be realizing his mistake, he is a long way down the wrong road. He could still make a contribution but the presidency is out of the question. He betrayed his conservative constiency and independents still think he is the “Grinch”.
He has nothing now only a lot of sincere “mea culpas” to conservatives would earn him a place at the conservative table. Even then it might be too late he has burned one too many bridges.

I will never forgive him for the scheme he pulled to back out of passing term limits. It was the final piece of his contract with America and he struck a deal with the democrats and had a congressman change his vote, so it would not pass.

Newt, what was your payoff?

Do you regret this too?

IMHO your take on this is right on point. I was once a very solid supporter of Newt, but I had to move on when he started making so many missteps.

I think he still has some ideas and skills that can help the conservative movement, but it’s going to be hard getting anyone to buy into his services.

I don’t know if he was responsible for the revolution his name is associated with, but I do know that he helped and that I will be forever pissed with those who took our good faith votes and turned out to be nothing more than politicians.

Yes, it was a mistake alienating Conservatives and Republicans just as your book was released.

I wonder how many of his books the publisher is sitting on as people decided that they didn't need to read Newt's opinion on anything after his Scozzafava moment.

Why does Sean Hannity have him on so often.

Because Sean isn't the brightest bulb in the box and he came of age when Mr. Newt was hitting his stride. Sean's still not that bright and Mr. Newt is well past his prime. Someday, Fox will figure that out and Sean will wander into the 'cold good night' wondering what happened to his career.

Regards,

TS

The last year has been an endless procession of the smart people admitting that us hicks were right and they were wrong. Take a number Newt. You have David Brooks Peggy Noonan, and Christopher Buckley, and many others in front of you in the mea culpa line. But here’s a hint for you if you want to be taken seriously as a conservative again someday: If it includes Nancy Pelosi, you probably want to avoid it.

Because Hannity is basically an establishment guy himself, in spite of his rhetoric.

Hey, Newt, make like a banana and split!
