John Edwards: The Ultimate American Politician The John Edwards scandal is not just about sex, argues Toby Harnden in Washington. It's about why Americans have lost trust in the political class.

Even judged alongside the caddishness and sexual misdeeds of politicians through the ages, John Edwards will take some beating. Just when it seems that the pretty boy former Senator and 2004 vice-presidential candidate can sink no lower, a fresh revelation emerges. We now know that Edwards cheated on his cancer-stricken wife by having an affair with Rielle Hunter, a New Age loon he met in a New York bar and then employed as a campaign videographer. He branded this "false", "untrue", "ridiculous" and "tabloid trash" until he was confronted with proof.
He then denied that he sired Hunter's two-year-old daughter Quinn, instead insisting that the father was Andrew Young, a long-time personal aide who he had paid to keep up the fiction. That lie crumbled when Young decided to write a tell-all book, due out this week, and Edwards issued a statement that it was "wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me".
As ever with Edwards, it was all about him. In the book, Young also reveals that Edwards, whose 2008 presidential campaign was an indignant crusade against poverty, would complain about going to events where "fat rednecks try to shove food down my face". At one point he asked: "I know I'm the people's Senator, but do I have to hang out with them?" Edwards, an Atkins Dieter, was already famous for his $400 haircuts. Young recounts that his boss would demand "HairTec Thick & Strong Shampoo for Fine, Fragile Hair".

Edwards sex-tape will hit the market/internet before too long. They always do.
It occurs to me that if Obama ever has a sex tape, it will be a solo performance.
And it occurs to me that when Edwards does not marry Rielle, there will be yet another book coming out from her.
I learned about the pregnant staffer early on here on FR. I told this to some liberals I knew who were planning to vote for him. They read me the RIOT act, blathering all of Edwards’s great qualities, and about his fantastic marriage and devotion to family, etc. I was given the “How DARE you” act. HOW I WISH I HAD RECORDED THESE!
It’s so funny how liberals did not realize they were being fed a pile of bull, when even before knocking up the videographer while his wife was dying of cancer but he had to continue his campaign for President, we knew he was a phony.
When Young demanded money to cover the costs of keeping Hunter in hiding, Edwards responded that he could come up with more cash once his wife died.
Pure scum! No doubt about it!
For which she will be rewarded handsomely, no doubt, as celebrity today is frequently not a matter of honorable achievement, but of being gossiped about.
Why are the D’rats still not distancing themselves from this guy who merrily goes on without any regrets?
The phony Silky Pony is not even worthy of the my little pony glue factory.
He’s a sleezebag. How fake and phony can one be?
And in front of a mirror
Ha, ha, I about died laughing!
Did anyone read the comments after the article? I can’t believe how many people think it’s just fine and dandy for leaders to have mistresses. Ho-hum, they all do it.
I’m flabbergasted. I assume that these men vow before God and witnesses to be faithful to their wives. If a man will violate his marriage vows and lie to his wife, he will lie to anyone.
That’s true: the man loves an audience, especially one unlikely to offer criticism.
Samuel Adams wrote: "He who is void of virtuous Attachments in private Life, is, or very soon will be void of all Regard for his Country. There is seldom an Instance of a Man guilty of betraying his Country, who had not before lost the Feeling of moral Obligations in his private Connections." - Letter to James Warren, November 4, 1775
Very nice quote. Of course, Jefferson’s dalliance with a slave girl might have some questioning this.
