Apple's consumer electronics are like Volvo's cars: high priced and solidly built, but without the performance or bells and whistles of the competition.

“another innovation formula — one more elitist and individual”

As oppossed to common and collective? And is always better? More NYT progressive leftism. S. Jobs is bad because AAPL isn’t a failure looking for a government handout. Any company with 40 billion in cash and no debt is by definition evil and the CEO the very image of Satan.

Jobs and AAPL should be more like M. Dell? Would that endear him to the NYT progressives? Or would it be better is AAPL simpily gave away their products and someone else’s propriatary code on them to please a few?

One of the most positive changes I have ever made in my life was getting rid of my Sony VAIO and getting my super-duper new Macbook. It has done wonders for my mental health. It does everything I want it to do without argument. I have not had a day’s problem with it, it has never frozen or shut down unexpectedly. I no longer live in fear of a viruses. I don’t know what the bells and whistles are that I’m missing, but I am perfectly happy without them. Simplicity and elegance works for me. As to price, you get what you pay for, and there is a lot of reverse snobbery involved when people start talking about what an Apple product costs.

He’s an elitist all right:

“It’s going to be the event of the season,” said Robert Aibel, owner of the Moderne Gallery in Philadelphia, which specializes in Nakashima works, and the author of the introduction to the Sotheby’s catalog. “The sale has one of the 10 most important lots of 20th-century furniture ever to come up at auction,” he said.

Mr. Aibel was referring to a 91-inch redwood dining room table called the “Arlyn” (a melding of Arthur and Evelyn) from 1988; it is expected to sell for $300,000 to $500,000. “It’s the most important piece he ever made for a private house,” Mr. Aibel said. “In fact, this sale is all masterworks, in many cases the best pieces he ever did.”

*************

“There are three great collections of Nakashimas: the Rockefellers’, the Nakashima Studio’s and the Krosnicks’,” said James Zemaitis, a specialist at Sotheby’s. “This is the best one that is ever going to come on the market. It’s the one moment where you are getting an entire environment.” The sale is estimated to bring $1.3 to $1.9 million.

There is no mention of Steve Job’s collection, but I’m sure it is quite impressive - although probably nothing compared to Oprah Winfreys’ Shaker furniture collection.

One person’s elitism is another person’s taste in art and furniture. I would love to have some Nakashima pieces, and I don’t think I’m an elitist.

Operating Systems are a bit like firearms La Lydia, there is no “right one” that fits everyone.

I will say though, Apple Users can be a bit geeky about their Apple adoration, they had a video conferencing for the launch of the Ipad and Mac Fans were gathering as if it were a Super Bowl party.

As for Jobs, he did skip ahead of the line for a new kidney or liver, I suppose that is what money can do, however the image of a Hippy Steve Jobs is just marketing hype, he is a good businessman.

Simplicity and elegance

These have always been the hallmarks of excellent design.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man.
Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded, here and
there, now and then, are the work of an extremely small
minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost
always opposed by all right-thinking people.
Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating.
or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the
people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as “bad luck.”

Still not as weird this though.

I’m sure that this idiot elitist report for the biggest idiot elitist publication in the country, wrote this article on a Mac. I fought off having a mac since I had an Apple 2+ in 1977. But I finally gave in after the vista debacle. The things work better, no question about it. And they work well together, witness the iPhone and the iPod. The cost is ridiculous, but, I don’t seem to upgrade as often. And when I upgrade my computer, I take my backup drive, plug it into the new computer and transfer everything, settings, data, programs, and they all seem to work. So if that’s elitist, count me in.

I doubt the folks in Redmon can muster genuince emotions like excitement over their products to begin with, so they pay actors to try and act excited for them.

lol!

The “wisdom of the crowd” and “open innovation.” Obvious that the NY Times would ridicule and attack such “silly” notions, ain’t it!

RE: Your comment that "...The cost is ridiculous."

Mac prices have never seemed "ridiculous" to me; but just for the record, here's the pricing on the latest 21" and 27" iMac all-in-one desktop models - my personal favorite.

Starting at $1,199 doesn't seem outrageous to me, but please draw your own conclusions.

Notice that both the keyboard and mouse are wireless - standard. Discount pricing is available through on-line suppliers. (e.g. I just saved about $300 in rebates with the Quad-Core 27" model and accessories I just ordered.)

Nope, he went to a state that had a short waiting list. Money allows you to do research and travel.
