Fiscal Fraud -- or Frugality?

For the past year, Republicans have been criticizing Barack Obama for out of control spending. So they must be pleased that they have forced him, in his State of the Union address, to concede the point by proposing a freeze on outlays of the kind Republicans generally don’t like.

Well, not exactly. After the administration floated a plan to cap non-defense, non-security discretionary spending for the next three years, the opposition party erupted in jeers.

The complaints were many: It affected only one-eighth of the budget, it came on top of big increases, and the savings would be trivial next to the deficits that are in the pipeline.

The loudest catcall came from a spokesman for House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio: “Given Washington Democrats’ unprecedented spending binge, this is like announcing you’re going on a diet after winning a pie-eating contest.”

With all due respect, the Republicans in Congress are the last people who should be jeering anyone on fiscal irresponsibility.

Really!

A pox on BOTH their houses.

Seriously, this Nation needs to clean out 95% if the incumbents in D.C.; for BOTH parties.

I'd say 95% is a minimum.

I have always thought that the best and highest purpose of an election is to give the voters a chance to throw the old bums out, and throw some new bums in. And have a contingency plan for when the new bums go bad and start to smell.

The freeze doesnt occur until 2011, after Obama has raised all the ceilings with another record breaking high budget.

The freeze is a political ploy , nothing more.

It is true republicans are not much better.
I agree elect no incumbents. but dont fall for the Obama freeze BS.

Sadly the big spending Republican Congresses of the Bush era were fiscally responsible compared to the Ried/Pelosi Congress.

Sadly, you are correct. And those who lead the Republican party today were in leadership positions during the Bush years so I can't imagine how they could honestly claim to be fiscal conservatives.

If the Republicans take control of one or both houses of Congress this fall, then I truly believe that the Speaker, the majority leader, the whips and their deputies, as well as all committee chairmen should be made up of members in their first or second House term or their first Senate term. It seems that if you're in Washington any longer than that then you lose all contact with reality.

Smoke and mirrors, watch the man behind the curtain syndrome. I do not , like many believe anything coming out of this guys mouth or out of the mouths of any of these criminals in this administration, congress or the senate. They know what’s in play and there going along for the ride and we, the middleclass will pay dearly for THIER GREED

I agree that the young bloods or old bull conservatives should be the leadership of Congress if the Pubs take over. They need to start paying attention to the voters when they select leadership in Congress. The only way we’ve ever won the Congress (since Eisenhower anyway) is to nationalize the election. Which requires congressional leadership that the voters like.
