I had a horrible math education in public school. I was essentially math illiterate until I began teaching my own kids. The right curriculum can make all the difference! I have learned more teaching my 5th and 3rd grader than I did all the way through school. And most importantly I have overcome my fear of math and I did not pass it on to my children.

No surprise here, but it sure affirms the homeschooling community.

Nearly 20 years ago the state of California had something called a basic skills and knowledge test that was to be given to see if someone was qualified to teach. Don't quote me on the name of the test as it has been some time. At any rate, this was a very easy test. I took it and got nearly every question correct. You had to score ridiculously low to pass the test. It was a breeze!

Or course the results of the tests were disparate. The media (MSN) railed against the test saying it was racist and such even though it wasn't. Once again Asians edged out Whites so how could it be racist? The Teachers Unions were absolutely against the test as were the Democratic Politicians (didn't you just know it). If I remember correctly it was finally dropped.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

And PA has the audacity to so heavily regulate homeschoolers and make sure unreasonable demands of them.

They should impose those same standards on the public school teachers that they make homeschoolers bear up under.
