By all outward appearances, John and Elizabeth Edwards were the power couple of the 21st century intelligent, compassionate, devoted to each other but a new book written by a former top aide to John Edwards shows a dark side to the couple that helped derail his presidential aspirations and culminated with their recent separation.
"The Politician," which went on sale Saturday, chronicles the association of author Andrew Young with John Edwards, beginning as Edwards was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998 and extending through two unsuccessful bids for the Democratic nomination for president. Their close bond ended when Edwards used Young to hide an affair with a campaign staffer and the fact that Edwards had fathered her child.
"It is an indisputable fact that I willingly participated in this ruse," Young said in the prologue to his book, clearly referring to Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter, who was hired by the campaign to produce promotional videos.
Still, Young's portrayal of the Edwardses in the 300-page book suggests that "the ruse" may have been John Edwards' persona as a down-to-earth champion of the working class and Elizabeth Edwards' image as a valiant cancer survivor.

I would be the last one to defend Elizabeth Edwards but.........on the cancer beliefs you have.......
Not all cancer patients lose weight, as a matter of fact many chemo patients gain weight, alot of weight. This is due to the medications given to treat the side effects of chemo.
There are many styles of wigs that people do NOT realize are not your real hair.
This is not just an observance of mine but personal experience.
We FReepers had this guy pegged five years ago. Thanks for the post. I’ll be checking out this book from the library.
Dammit! If it wasn’t snowing I would go buy this book now, so I ‘d have something to read while I am stuck indoors.
I think Young had a bit of a man crush on The King.
Gee, there were TWO John Edwards.
Who knew? /s
There was a reason he could not carry his own state..
Ms Edwards ain’t much better than him...they both played up her illness 2 years ago like she was near dead and folks in NC say she is a real piece of work.
She is even more lefty than him...overeducated fembot southern style....a traitor to her region.
Frankly, I don’t think he is that much different from 99 percent of all politicians. They are a lower form of life.
Well, he did say "I feel in love with the guy" in the interview. At the very least, it was a case of hero worship.

There was just something very fishy about the way the Edwards' jumped out in front of the camera during the campaign to announce that her cancer had returned. I thought so then and I still think so.
And to say that, given those circumstances, their decision was to continue his campaign? Come on...no one in that situation would make that decision.
I acknowledge that this is nothing more than a gut feeling on my part. And saying this about Elizabeth Edwards is not implying it about anybody else.
It's just my opinion...nothing more.
I know Cancer patients who never lost weight..or hair...
Was just trying to correct your beliefs on cancer and its treatment, not your opinion of Elizabeth Edwards.
Hah!
Just as I expected!
Naah, that’s the cursed seat. No incumbent won reelection to it since 1968. Sometimes it was a younger challenger who prevailed. Faircloth was younger than Terry Sanford, but Faircloth was no youngster. Edwards was “good looking” and slick, and ‘98 turned out to be a bust for us, and Faircloth looked like the old man that Sanford had 6 years prior. Edwards was so scared to run again in ‘04 that he was looking for any way out, and the VP gave him that out. It looks like Burr may finally break the curse this year.
And then I heard there was going to be a press conference. The speculation was that he was going to suspend his campaign because of Elizabeths’ cancer returning and I actually began developing some respect for him, assuming he would step out of the public eye in order to concentrate on his wife and family.
I seem to recall during the press conference there was some confusion because everyone was assuming he was going to quit, but when he made clear he was staying in the race, some in the press began to wonder what the point of the press conference was. A simple press release could have announced the return of the cancer.
I thought at the time that I was being too cynical for thinking it was a publicity stunt to garner sympathy support for his candidacy, but apparently I am still not cynical enough when it comes to certain politicians.
oh. thanks for pointing that out. Must’ve missed this.
I gained thirty pounds after dignosed with cancer while having chemo,,people gain weight on chemo from the steroid.
Not everyone loses hair, depends on the chemo.
Cancer today is a bit different from what people think. Long survivals with cancer are not uncommon, especially with breast cancer.
PS crappy people get cancer. I have no doubt Liz is a crappy person. But “demanding wives” are often the response to passive agressive manipulative sleezbag husbands so I wonder if marriage to him created her persona.
He is the worst human being I can imagine. At least she wasn’t screwing around.
You lurked here for ten years before you decided to sign up?
The tipping point was...?
