PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Doctors on the U.S. Navy's hospital ship Comfort are fighting gangrenous infections in broken limbs as they try to save the lives, if not the arms and legs, of Haiti's earthquake victims.
"Originally we were seeing primarily a lot of orthopedic injuries now we're starting to see those injuries and wounds are infected," Commander Mark Marino, head of nursing on the USNS Comfort, said on a tour of the ship as it was anchored off the coast of Port-au-Prince.
Asked how many of the 500 people treated so far on the ship have needed amputations, Marino replied simply "lots."
The total number of amputees due to the earthquake could stretch into the tens of thousands, said Dr Ronald Waldman of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

USNS Comfort.
That looks like Mercy.
Now this looks like the USNS Comfort.
Haiti ping
Is this the same ship COMFORT that helped the Haitians back in 1994? I have an interesting letter about that.
800 Haitians came on board the ship in 1994.
They refused to use the porta-poties on the deck, instead crapped and urinated wherever they felt.
Acted like animals. No personal hygene at all.
Had sex in public all the time,
Rioted, were fought off with firhoses till 100 armed Marines came aboard.
Defecated, threw human waste at the crew.
When they finally left the ship it took several years to get rid of the smell.
There were other words about them which I won’t repeat here.
Looks like the Haitians will not be causing much trouble this time. Still, we need to get them back to hospitals in their own land even if they are in tents.
