Parole recommended for Manson family member Davis

Bruce Davis, a member of Charles Manson's murderous cult who participated in two killings, was recommended for parole Thursday after nearly four decades in prison.

The 67-year-old Davis has been in prison since 1972 after being convicted in the murders of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea.

Attorney Michael Beckman, who represented Davis at the parole hearing, said Davis acknowledged for the first time that he shared responsibility for the crimes, even though he didn't kill anyone himself.

"He said, 'I was as responsible as everyone there,'" Beckman said.

The recommendation by a two-member panel of the Board of Parole Hearings came after the 26th hearing for Davis, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said.

It was just the first step in a process that also requires approval by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other parole board members. The process could take five more months.

Los Angeles County prosecutors could petition the governor to reject parole, but spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said no decision had been made on how to proceed. Schwarzenegger's office said it would base its decision on public safety and other considerations.

Davis was serving a life sentence after driving the car that took Manson family members to Hinman's home in the Topanga Canyon area of Los Angeles.

HELL NOOOOO! None of them should be paroled..period. Having seen the crime scene photos shows the brutality of these murders. I don’t care if they didn’t partake on the crime itself but they were witness to these crimes and did nothing, so they are just as guilty.

California being so liberal crazy who knows there is a possibility that one could be paroled one day.

Let’s shoot for the moon! Why not make it SIX decades in prison. Or even SEVEN!

On the other hand, if I knew there was someone waiting to off the scum the day he stepped out into the sunlight, my opinion might be swayed...

Yes, but I believe budgetary shortfalls are soon going to require California to open their prison gates and start flooding the state with convicts.

Who should they release? Some 67 year-old man who will probably go live out his life in quiet seclusion somewhere or some younger guy still very capable of returning to violent crime?

I'm not advocating one or the other, just something to think about.

He should have received the death penalty immediately!

Yes, but that didn't happen and it's not going to. Not to him and not to many other equally deserving California inmates.

Actually it did happen.

I’m not positive about Davis but the Manson family got the death penalty and it was vacated by a moratorium of the CA Supreme Court shortly afterword and was retroactive or they would have been executed.

I lived in So CA not too far from the Tate and LaBianca murders at that time. It was scary and when his mob was captured and prosecuted it was a great day.

I understand what you’re saying about prisons and prison funding but these murderers should never be released. It’s really sad that they weren’t executed when they were sentenced to it.

Thanks for posting that link. Yes, I had forgotten about Byrd being impeached, she was very anti-death penalty.

NO Parole for this murdering devil! Next they will try to parole Manson because he was abused as a child and misunderstood. These killers should rot in jail and count their lucky stars the death penalty wasn’t in force.
