I figure Palin is doing it out of a sense of obligation to McCain. Doesn’t mean that anyone has to listen to her advice on this race.

Bingo. I am confident that Palin has gotten word to Hayworth, in private, that “You understand I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for John McCain. I owe him this. I just want you to understand [wink wink].” And that is one honorable position for her to take, although there are others.
