S&P warns it may downgrade Japan

By MarketWatch

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said Tuesday that it may downgrade Japan's sovereign credit ratings if data don't improve or if the government doesn't get its fiscal and economic house in order.

The ratings agency said it's placed a negative outlook on Japan's AA sovereign long-term credit rating, saying it could issue a downgrade to AA- "if economic data remain weak and measures to boost medium-term growth are not forthcoming, given the country's high government debt burden and its weak demographic profile."

The announcement, which came after the close of stock market trading in Japan, initially caused the dollar to rally vs. the yen before the pair reversed course. See currencies

Translation; They are nearly out of their citizen’s capital, and are close to just outright money printing (never a shortage of money, only capital)

If rating agencies were “honest” the whole world would get downgraded, business and government. I doubt there are a lot of true “A’s” out there right now.

Last I heard, they would wait until 2013. At least one of rating agencies said so.

I think there are still lots of privately owned corporations that are still in very good shape. It’s when their stocks are traded publicly and pay dividends that they get into trouble.

...ha!...remember all the American self-flagellation back in the 80s about how the Japs sent their kids to school year round?...and because we didn’t, we were doomed because our kids couldn’t compete...well, if they’re so smart over there in the Pacific, how come they’re hurting a generation later?

Speaking of line-up for financial disaster, first is Japan, 2nd U.S., and 3rd China.

Japan got into trouble first.

Wall St. laughed at them, then about 12 years later, they went into the same trap.

Now Chicom laughs at U.S.. In a few years, they will be into the trap as well.

U.S. is blessed in that China won't have a dozen years or so to laugh at her, but only a few.
