Surrendering Delaware Senate Seat? Dems Biden, Kaufman Won’t Run

The Democrats appear to be trying to hand another Senate seat to the Republicans. And in a longtime Democratic state, no less.

Delaware Sen. Ted Kaufman just joined state Attorney General Beau Biden in announcing he would not seek the state’s open Senate seat in 2010. Republicans, meanwhile, have a strong candidate in Rep. Mike Castle.

Biden, the vice president’s son, was expected to run for the seat held by his father for decades. But in recent weeks, Democrats have grown nervous as Biden has not made the anticipated announcement. He dropped the bombshell that he would not run this morning.

Kaufman, the current senator and a former staffer to the elder Biden, was seen as a placeholder, but he has garnered respect for his service in the interim, and would have been a natural alternative.

But in a statement this morning, Kaufman made it clear he’s not running, either. “Serving the people of Delaware in the U.S. Senate is as fulfilling, challenging, and humbling as I imagined when I was appointed,” he said. “But as I said at the time, I will not seek election for the balance of the term. I will continue to spend my time as Senator serving the people of Delaware and our nation and not running for office. It is a commitment I made when appointed, and one I will fulfill.”

The difficult political environment facing the Democrats was made clear last week when Republican Scott Brown captured a Massachusetts Senate seat long held by former Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy. That was not long after two senior Democrats, Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, announced their retirement. Both would have faced tough races.

Beau Biden’s brother and uncle are so mired in at least 6 ponzi schemes (so far running into the hundreds of millions in losses) under investigation by US and Australian financial regulators that his own entry into politics would cause the entire debacle to be shown the light of day and force Joe Biden to resign as VP.

As my state rep said, regarding a 10th Amendment resolution: “It’s too Conservative”. Sums up the Biden duchy of Delaware. Castle is a RINO and his House seat will go RAT (Carney vs. Nobody).

At one point in time Scott Brown and Duncan Hunter were nobody’s. I’d think that the statewide Delaware GOP (which can’t be any more lame then the one here in the GayState) can’t find a nobody who has potential to be somebody.
