Haiti earthquake: government fears toll could rise to 300,000

Haiti's government has claimed the toll from the country's earthquake could rise to as many as 300,000 dead.

The confirmed death toll was raised to 150,000 on Sunday, but that was only the count of bodies so far found and collected in the capital Port-au-Prince.

It did not include those recovered in other areas like the shattered city of Leogane, near the earthquake epicentre, and Jacmel on the southern coast.

300,000 deaths?

I'm quite skeptical.

After the first 150,000 it is not beyond belief this could go even higher than 300,000.

By northern Calif standards a 7.0 is not that big but they haven’t had one in 200 years and didn’t see a need to build for those numbers plus I guess most of the previous aid money went in the pockets of the dictators and his friends...

warnings that the US alone would have to contribute $5 billion

Sadly, 300,000 is not implausible if one includes people dying from infection from untreated compound fractures and disease from lack of clean water, food and medicine. It may be impossible to arrive at an accurate estimate.

Why it was not obvious from the beginning that large refugee camps would be needed to save people from dying in the weeks after the earthquake, I don't understand.

I am waiting for a Democrat in either the House of Senate, or perhaps both, to demand that all these refugees be brought into the United States and be given healthcare, housing,
jobs, etc. I will not be surprised if it happens soon!!
Think of it, it is many more votes for the Dem’s if they pursue this avenue. Of course, they would be given even greater status than the illegals since the Dem’s would do everything above board to bring them into the Country.

Early on Senegal offered to give land for these folks and I said the US should pay their passage, clear Haiti and give it to the Clintons for his library...

Port au Prince had an estimated population alone of three million more or less. Without even counting casualties from outside the city, a ten percent mortality rate, given that virtually the entire city collapsed in a heap, is not unreasonable. Remember, we're talking essentially shacks and shanties and unreinforced cement, not modern first world buildings.

Death estimates in such disasters, especially in 3rd world nations are nearly always WAY over-estimated. This is intentional - to inflate the sympathy factor and prod other nations and charities to step up their aid (cash).

I won’t make light of the tragedy in Haiti - a whole bunch have lost their lives, and lives are turned upside down. But the poor response is primarily the fault of Haiti. Their major seaport has been congested with trash/wrecks/and other obstacles for a long time - but it wasn’t a priority to clear them out (wouldn’t that have helped their economy? Just sayin’).

And has anyone taken up Senegal on their offer to relocate as many Haitian refugees as want to come? Seems like a plumb deal to me - as they didn’t really have much to begin with, then most have lost everything they had...

But I guess we will have to bring them here...

disease from lack of clean water, food and medicine.

But lets not forget - those were problems before the earthquake. The problem is just worse now. It isn't like Haiti was an island paradise just a couple of weeks ago that is just now suddenly turned upside down. Way too many years of political despots and folks who were clueless about justice and taking care of themselves.

Yeah, so the crackpot dictators and their cronies can line their pockets with the aid money while their populace starve and die.

True. The U.S. Navy should have cleared up the port facility by now and put it to operational use.
