The National Weather Service has issued a rare tornado warning for Northern California's Contra Costa County after a trained weather spotter reported seeing a funnel cloud.

The weather service says the cloud was seen about 9 miles south of Oakley and could touch down in a rural area of the east San Francisco Bay-area county.

It's the second time in a week that a tornado warning has been issued. The first was issued Wednesday for Santa Clara county.

The weather service urged people to go to a basement or interior hallway or room and lie down.

"trained weather spotter"

That reminds me of my son's weather rock: a) dry rock = sunny weather b) wet rock = rainy weather c) no rock = tornado

Trained weather spotters give a very valuable service to anyone in the country other than CA., obviously. In the hinterland(the rest of the USA) we appreciate their services. They are usually more correct and up to the minute than the NWS. People in CA know a storm is coming in from the coast and it’s going to rain. People in the Mid West see a storm coming and know to go to the cellar, when needed. We all get goofy weather coast to coast, but I’d rather have 10 foot snow drifts than what CA gets. Not including sliding into the Ocean or bobbing up and down in an eathquake that will cost the rest of us Trillions. Trillions more than 0bama will spend. Maybe.

Why would they say 9 miles south of Oakley? why not say Brentwood, Knightsen or Discovery Bay?
I looked outside and saw nothing.

I'm in Santa Clara county for another couple of days. The weather has been terrible. Rain, snow on the hills, wind ... blah. Just please let things die down long enough for my plane to escape.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting back to Asia and tropical climate. At least when it rains in the tropics, it's not cold.

"...but I’d rather have 10 foot snow drifts than what CA gets..."

Spoken like one who has no idea what he's talking about. Do you have any idea of the geographical and climatic range within California? Have you heard of the Sierra Nevada?

It just means that it has to be properly cooked to avoid the risk of salmonella or ecoli or something like that.

If it gets really black outside and your ears pop, run for cover, drag a mattress into an inside hallway or a room not on an exterior wall, and pull the mattress over yourself for protection from debris. The sound really is like a freight train approaching and passing, the ground will vibrate if it’s close.

As far as the odd use of town names, sometimes the NOA maps list towns that have been absorbed into a larger municipality. I’m betting Oakley is older than Brentwood, Knightsen or Discovery Bay.

Most of the states have four seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter.

In California the four seasons are: earthquakes, fires, mudslides, riots.

Tornado season is not on the usual list.

O Wow then it is true. I’m in Concord, after my dental appointment I went to the grocery Food Maxx and as I approached the Diary section to get some yogurt. There was this woman next to me talking on her cellphone then she hanged up. Then she turned to me and told me if I believe this but her husband just told her that we are getting a tornado warning. I thought she was joking, but now coming online to read this.

As I was driving home, I can see very dark dark clouds looming over what to me looks like Brentwood, Antioch, ..way out toward those areas.

Going to keep an eye on the news and see what they report.

So when does the cannibalism start?
We’ve had -20 this winter so far, but by golly we don’t have mud slide, fires out of control, earthquakes or worst of all - LIBERALS or PROGRESSIVES out here. We can handle the weather and not eat our own, unlike the above mentioned. Yes, I do understand the geography in CA, do you understand the demographics for the rest of country that is continually paying for it? When’s the BIG bailout coming to CA? Not on my arse. I’ll be goddamed if I have to pay for it.

The weather service urged people to go to a basement...

LOL. Obviously "the weather service" has never lived in California. Basements in California are rarer than Democrats who would vote for a tax cut.
