U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., holds a 22-point lead over former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth in a potential Republican primary this year for McCain’s seat.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released Friday gives McCain 53 percent and Hayworth 31 percent among GOP primary voters.
Hayworth, a former sportscaster who became a U.S. representative from Scottsdale, now is a conservative radio commentator on KFYI-AM 550 in Phoenix.
McCain is seeking a fifth term in the U.S. Senate after losing the 2008 presidential race. Hayworth takes a tougher line on immigration than McCain, who favors a guest worker program.
The survey, conducted this month, included 502 likely primary voters.
McCain has taken a stronger stance against President Barack Obama on health care and the economy this week since a Republican won the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts.
The Arizona Republican said Obama should have focused more on jobs and the economy and less on health care reform. He told CNN on Thursday that Obama has not called him for cooperation on any issue since the new president took office last year.
Hayworth has not yet decided whether to run for Senate, and no major Democrat is in the race for McCain’s seat.
Is there any other reason to leave his position other than to run?

Not really. If you’ve never been a victim of discrimination based on age, then you don’t understand how these terms are degrading.

Thirty one percent without campaigning or spending one cent should make McAmnesty worry.
There’s the term old again. McCain has many elitist contributors, not to mention George Soros backs him. Yes, George sent him money during the 2008 campaign, as well as zero. That doesn’t mean he can’t be beaten with a very, well-run, ground campaign such as what Scott Brown ran. This is going to be interesting, if JD does run.
I was most impressed with Hayworth in 2003-04. Remember when the fuel pipeline broke between Tucson and Phoenix? Poor old Napolitano had not a clue what to do. Gas shortages in Phoenix and costs 3-4 dollars above the national average.
Hayworth had a plan and he shared it with Napolitano. Get the gasoline on train tankers pronto! Get gasoline to the Phoenix area. Get semi-tankers to transfer the fuel from the trains to the retailers. Get the pipeline crews working pronto. Contract bonuses to companies that could deliver the soonest and pay them for it.
Napolitano took his advice and problem was solved in two weeks or sooner.
Hayworth knows how to fix stuff.

The former Gov had no clue how to fix the problem. McCain offered no advice.
Hayworth built a plan and challenged Napolitano to implement it. It worked.
McCain is, plain and simple, an opportunistic liar.
Says he, "What are ya gonna believe, what I say this week, or what I've done for 20 years?"
Gotcha! Seems like THE person to teach McCain a few things, also!
McCain wants to start the health care fiasco up again! There is a thread on it. ‘Ya know, the bipartisan thing.
It is not ageism to point out the Juan McCain IS, in fact, old.
And his age has NOTHING to do with the fact that he is a) as washed-up, has-been politician who has done almost as much in his political career as the Kennedy Mob to destroy the Constitution of the United States; and b) his refusal to “go quietly” into retirement is proof that his ego is equal to that of Zero’s.

We are, every one of us, “victims of discrimination” at one point or another in our lives; and a term is only “degrading” to you if you allow it to be.
Other people only have the power over you that you choose to give them.
I will never vote for McCain again... I only voted for him for President because of Sarah! Really bummed that she annouced she would support him without even knowing who the competition is...
I know how important it is to regain control of house and senate, or at very least end the super majority, but I am also to a point that I believe all the incumbents need to go!
A little less sensitivity may be beneficial.
That door swings both ways, ya know? If you’ve never been on the receiving end of this type of discrimination, then you might reverse your position on sensitivity.
