The "uselectionatlas.org" site (it's run by "Dave leip" and it's often faster just to google that) has the stats all the way back to 1789, often by counties, with great maps, etc. You just have to poke aorund on it. It also has a state-by-state for 2008 as well as many previous. The infoplease you linked to is almsot certainly something that was posted before the absolutely final, all absentees in, etc. In many states leip has a few thousand more -- on the west coast, especially, where there are many votes by mail and absentees, the numbers are much larger, over a million higher in california. Leip's numbers also agree with other scholarly sites.
The exact totals are:
2008: 131,461,000
2004: 122,293,000
2000: 105,417, 000
So, 2008 was neither the "highest turnout (percentage-wise) in history, as some Obama-bots claimed in the early flush of victory, nor a low turnout, as some said who didn't see the very final numbers. It was up a bit from 2004, but not extraordinary by the standards of mid-century, especially 1960.
