Texas Monthly ^ | 1.21.2010 | Paul Burka

Posted on 01/22/2010 11:32:49 AM PST by wolfcreek

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

Well, the next President won’t be either Obama or Reagan, so purists on both sides will be never be happy. Any Presidential candidate who promises to pay attention to national defense, stop growing government, and leave the economy alone to recover will be good enough.

Well..

If I had to say something nice about him...

He isn’t very good but at least he is consistent.

Look for Jim DeMint to run. A genuine Reaganite.

The last thing we need is a pro-abort like Kay Hutchinson in the Governor’s mansion or a clueless Debra Medina who wants to create new taxes and fund all our local, county, school services with money collected and dispersed by the State!

See post 81 on this thread for documentation

He wants to be President.

No, Texas Monthly says he wants to be President.

Texas Monthly is a liberal rag published in Austin. They hate anything conservative or Republican. If you are a Longhorn fan, you should know that!

Please, no more threads like this. It just brings out the blue-state jerks who think Texans give a crap about their opinions!

Texas does not assess a state level property tax ... all property taxes are locally assessed (City, Counties, ISD, Special Purpose Entities, etc).

The State level is where school/education needs to be administered. Local ISD’s should be entity that runs the school district and operates the schools. The State level is who ensures it stays that way.

In Texas local governmental entities are a division of the State government. Not separate entities existing on their own. This ensures that the State is run by it’s citizens and citizens who are elected to public office. Not national whim.

None of the education of our children belongs at the national level with the Department of Education.

The State and the nation needs a new tax structure. Debra Medina is the only one talking about it. She says at her website: “that property taxed is not owned at all.” A true statement and would use the sales tax (a consumption tax) to fund government. Again she is talking about it, something others are not doing at all.

You will not catch Perry or KBH stabbing their sacred money cow.

this is actually a very good article. i understand Burka is a big lib., but...I think Perry is going to end up being a surprisingly strong candidate out there among non-Texans.

It’s all about the white males. And Perry is going to do extremely well with them....

Yep. I posted it without bias but, some apparently took offense.

With the upcoming Repub. primary between Perry, KBH and Debra Medina, tensions are running a little high around here.

Are we sure this isn't a sneak peak of the April 1st edition of Texas Monthly? Perry couldn't even garner 40% of the vote in 2006 in Texas against a heavily divided field. If he was some kind of shining star, he wouldn't have been stuck working for a third-rate campaign like Giuliani's in 2008.

That's on top of all of the baggage he's got. The Democrats would be foaming at the mouth to have a go at him with all of that baggage.

I read the TM for the same reason that I sometimes listen to NPR: because I believe in “know your enemies.”
