Socialite Betty Broderick denied parole in murders

One-time San Diego socialite Betty Broderick on Thursday was denied parole for fatally shooting her ex-husband and his new wife more than 20 years ago, with a two-person panel saying she remains angry and unrepentant over her crime.

The decision came after a dramatic five-hour hearing in which Broderick's own four children were divided on whether she should win her freedom. Two believed she should remain behind bars.

Board of Prison Terms Commissioner Robert Doyle, who delivered the decision to Broderick, told her he had never seen an inmate who had made so little progress in acknowledging what she had done.

"Your heart is still bitter, and you are still angry," he said. "You show no significant progress in evolving. You

Narcissistic sociopaths don't show remorse and are never sorry for their actions. In Betty's case, it was always someone else fault.

I remember when this happened. A woman I worked with supported Betty’s actions. Unbelievable!

Ok..probably going to get alot of heat here but...Here you had a wife who worked her *ss off to help her husband get through his schooling; bearing children along the way (having multiple miscarriages as well) she gave her entire heart and soul into making sure of that there was a home and doing more than her part and then....after? He started rolling in the filthy money as a trial lawyer and of course went into his male menopausal syndrome....and wah lah...an affair with a woman 20 years his junior ensued. The wife? for her effort? kicked to the curb...and the settlement of money is just not enough to heal some wounds. She gave up everything to help him succeed. The wife always gets kicked to the curb in a situation like that. Happened in my own family...although no one was killed (surprisingly). Alot of men use up their women and then move on. It’s a disgusting trait of highly successful men....men in general but especially when money is involved. I’m with the guy on the first jury...”what took her so long?” She had lousy representation....should have pled the insanity defense because that is essentially what happened....’a slow boil’ and then a ‘snap’.

And Daniel Broderick made it all worse by using his connections, his power and his lawyer skills to gaslight Betty; the crazier he could make her look, the more his wonderful friends tut-tutted and “understood” how he could toss her out for a gold digging little whore (who looked AMAZINGLY like the young Betty, before the four kids and the years supporting the douche through both medical AND law school.)

I always thought the happy ending here was that Daniel and Linda got EXACTLY what they deserved.

From what I have seen, she is strange and sociopathic.

That said, her husband probably treated the dog better than he did her.

He was a major divorce lawyer. After she put him through school, he found a nice cookie, and proceeded to destroy her legally, eventually winding up with everything including the kids. Nobody would represent her in court because they all knew her husband. I can see a unstable person losing it.

For me it’s a classic case of one person pushing another over the edge. The murders were brutal, and I’d never say he deserved it, but I do have sympathy for her. I know if anyone did that to me, I’d be very bitter.

She already killed them, so now what is she all incensed about, is it because she can’t damn them to hell too?

The denial was for the longest term possible - 15 years - although Broderick could reapply in three years if she makes progress.

No surpise that she hasn't made much progress. Betty has always felt justified and that's not going to change. I think she's resigned to spending the rest of her life in prison, and that's another reason she's still angry.

I lived in San Diego then too...I vividly remember the Union Trib’s coverage of his funeral...a big mass, then all the buddies got together at an Irish bar to sing “O Danny Boy” and talk about what a great guy and a great lawyer he’d been.

WTF?

Did it never occur to any of them that if he’d been less a lawyer and more a human being, he would have still been alive...

I too vividly remember this terrible and so very sad case...and I’m absolutely shocked by your comments.

I remember during the trial, the questions were asked, if she was so miserable, why not just leave?

No...she didn’t want out, she wanted revenge. She acted as judge, jury and executioner.

She could have simply walked away and started a new life, but instead chose to murder two people.

Is that the penalty women have in store for any man who falls out of love?

I’ll tell you exactly what set her off: The huge wedding in Balboa Park complete with a horse drawn wedding carriage with her and Dan’s friends in attendance. Dan should have quietly married his mistress. He should have also paid Betty a much generous share of his earnings and he should have given her the La Jolla house.

Actually, he was president of the San Diego Bar Association and his specialty was personal injury law, since also had a doctor of medicine degree. She put him through both medical and law school.

She snapped...period. And he pushed her to that point. He was a dog, went after the whore in the office who was more than willing to spread for him and the rest is history. It’s too bad she lost control but it is totally understandable.

Her support check was generous - as I recall, something like $16K a month - and lots of people thought she should just have been happy with that and done him the courtesy of never bothering him again.

But her whole life was about building his career and being Mrs. Daniel Broderick - their friends, their social life - easy for others to say she should have just been happy with the money. Besides which, it was a fraction of what he was hauling in, thanks in large part to her efforts.

He tricked her into signing away her house, he “fined” away her monthly check if she swore on phone messages...he played with her because he thought he was so damn smart. LOL.

I DO think she it was pre-meditated (duh) and I DON’T think she should be paroled, but if ever there was a murder that I understand, it was this one.
