For all of Washington's political polarization, the U.S. Senate remains a clubby place. Sure, lawmakers talk smack about the unparalleled malevolence of the opposition, but there is, in general, a high degree of respect for the institution, its members, and its time-honored Way of Doing Things.
While the House is known for its ideological cowboys, demagogues, and revolutionaries, the Senate is where bright lines and rough edges tend to get smoothed out in the name of statesmanship and legislative compromise.
Clearly, no one told this to Jim DeMint.
During his first term, South Carolina's junior senator has made quite the name for himself. Armed with a courtly demeanor, a blandly pleasant visage, and a butter-melting drawl, he has set about flaying Democrats with a fervor that causes even some of his Republican colleagues to cringe. (His July call for the GOP to make health care Obama's "Waterloo" prompted multiple Republican lawmakers to distance themselves or flatly criticize him.)
But more notable than DeMint's savaging of the opposition has been his savaging of his own people. Perched on the far-right edge of his conference--he was the only senator to speak at the September 12 tea party on Capitol Hill--DeMint has spent recent years conducting something of a party purity crusade.

DeMint PING
He sure stuck to it. I am so proud of DeMint.
We could use a chamber full of DeMints.
Or, if Pennsylvania could trade in both of our worthless senators on one half as good as Jim DeMint. I think we will, but we'll still be stuck with Bob Casey, Jr.
If they really thought DeMint was committing a Jihad, See BS would be supporting him.
1) Who says that RINOs are "his own people"?
2) Somebody's got to savage them, and it is what he was elected to do.
Demint/Palin 2012
He had me at “Waterloo”.
No surprise this comes from See BS.
One of the few who demanded transparency in State Department, Harold Kohs, legal opinion on Honduras and went to investigate on his own. He takes action, and seems to be a great leader.
He was on local talk radio today in Fargo ND. Your comment was my thought exactly.
The Republicans trying to criticize or distance themselves from him are the ones who have to go first.
Thank God for Jim DeMint. Nuff said.
Thank you, Jim "Duke of Wellington" DeMint.
DeMint - one of the very few conservatives left in office. Keep up the butt-kicking Jim!
I would like to thank CBS from the bottom of my South Carolina heart! Whenever national MSM bash Senator DeMint, he is assured of a good 3-5% improvement in his approval ratings in SC, and with each hit piece, the chances of his reelection become even greater! I haven’t felt this good about a Senator since I grew up in North Carolina and worked on two campaigns of the Late Senator Jesse Helms!
Keep going Jim! We appreciate you back home! With our other senator here, you’re really the only voice Conservatives HAVE!
I love the guy!
Dump Steele, put in Demint and then we can talk!
We sure could.
We are beginning to have a few problems here in Tx.
