CA: Whitman chips in another $20 million (39 million so far, Trying to 'eBuy' California Gub seat?)
LA Times ^ | 1/20/10 | Anthony York - Capitol Weekly

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman’s campaign spent nearly $19 million in 2009, according to figures provided by her advisers. The former EBay chief executive donated an additional $20 million this week to her gubernatorial effort -- bringing her personal contributions thus far to $39 million.

With the new $20-million infusion, Whitman will have $30.5 million in her gubernatorial bank account, according to a campaign statement. Whitman has said she is willing to spend more than $100 million of her own money in her quest for the governorship.

Whitman’s campaign sought to emphasize that Whitman herself wasn't the only one contributing to her race for governor.

...

Whitman’s personal spending is expected to shatter individual spending records. In 1998, Democrat Al Checchi spent more than $40 million in his failed quest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. In 2006, Democrat Steve Westly spent $35 million on a campaign that lost the Democratic primary to Phil Angelides.

Forbes magazine recently estimated Whitman’s net worth at $1.4 billion. She is up against another mega-rich candidate, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, for the Republican nomination for governor.

All the ladies are loaded.. whitman, fiorina, both dumb as rocks, meanwhile the men are mostly dumb rich white guys and Tom (wonder what he will ruin for next week?) Campbell, except for Chuck DeVore. This is not a paid ad. :)

He's last in money in hand but he is a pretty rock solid conservative, so in the end, he's worth a helluva lot more than the rest of the fat cat rest of the bunch running this year.

Whatever they are, they have to be better than Boxer. What amazes me is that anybody would spend that much money on a no win job like being CA Governor. Talk anout dead end...

Three liberal RINOs and a conservative.

Sounds like a good opportunity.

Dead end? Well, since CA cannot possibly get any worse but only better, and since they can take credit for it and use the huge CA platform to run for the presidency, a la Reagan, it is hardly a dead end.

Don’t vote for this RINO. She’s an admirer of the self-avowed communist Van Jones. The State of California isn’t a website.

May not have an alternative. There's no one else running on the Republican side and the Democrats will probably put up Jerry Brown. Yes, that Jerry Brown. May have to vote for Whitman. Can't be worse than Arnold and she's much brighter than Arnold. Yes, she got conned by Van Jones and that worries me but she learns fast and as I said, she's smart and has money-lots of it.

I kind of like this. If you pay for your own campaign then you aren’t beholden to the special interests that normally pay for campaigns.

The problem here, is that Meg Whitman basically ran eBay into the ground, revenue-wise (somewhat) and reputation-wise (basically killed it). eBay has had to counter her terrible purchases of Skype and other nondescript tech companies, by raising listing fees to oblivion.

How she believes that she could run a state with a GDP larger than most foreign countries? I shudder at the thought...
